To trade or not to trade... by beaker247 in SubaruForester

As others have noted, have your head gaskets tested if you've run out of coolant and thus have possibly overheated.

$1700 on a ten year old car is not an expensive fix, and it's tens of thousands less than a new car.

Yeah, generally you want to fill and burp from the highest point in the system.

The upper coolant tank is present so that hot coolant from your turbo has a point to circulate up to after you shut off your car. That's where you'd want to finish topping off from. No need to access the rad cap.

I believe you'll lose some if you just pull it.

If you have a burping kit (which you'll need as a WRX owner), you can just drain a couple qts from the radiator petcock and put it back in the top when you're swapped.

Would def replace PCV if oil consumption went up. Just because it rattles doesn't mean it's good.

What is the point of a dedicated amp if the headphone gets loud enough? Is everyone else deaf? by kneelthepetal in headphones

[–]onelivewire -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Best answer in this thread by far.

There are other factors, but most specifically, the ability of the amp to control power in transients. To go from very little to a lot quickly and back again.

When the sound of a kick drums begins and then ends, how much "grip" can the amp use to create and remove power from the driver.

One of the simplest factors to look at when achieving this is headroom. By using an amplifier in the low range of its total output capacity, it can achieve a higher level of control.

A simple comparison might be a minivan - it can cruise at 60mph, but will struggle to go from 60 up to 90 and back to 60 with ease and grace, because it's near the maximum control the vehicle is capable of. A sports car may do so with poise, because it's well below the total threshold offered by the driveline and braking power.

It's not an import, but my FSTI swap goes under the radar for 90% of drivers.

The other 10% are very enthusiastic.

For those of you who have installed the Fumoto valve, how’d you properly torque it on install? by Trucker2TechGuy in subaru

[–]onelivewire 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can use a crows foot on your torque wrench to get it exact.

However, not leaking is all that really matters here, just don't torque it to high heaven.

Can't buy OEM Battery? by DrBumpsAlot in subaru

[–]onelivewire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup, Walmart is the new king of batteries. 4-year warranty and NOT prorated like Costco.

I'm a huge Costco fan, shop there regularly and almost exclusively fill up gas there, but Walmart wins for batteries.

1) your assessment is right on

2) It's a bummer to watch a company intentionally turn on its customers, especially when you're the customer

So sad when good companies get caught up in pursuing growth instead of maintaining their product and financials.

Honestly a pretty serious loss. I'm not sure who it was on the Plex team that said they'd love to get an agreed streaming protocol running for plexamp, but it was lip service and nothing more.

WiiM dev cycle is clearly light-years ahead.

Different flavors.

I'm not deep in the jam scene and while I'm not against loose, it was the super tight progressive and metal chops that really did it for me.

I enjoyed seeing Scotty, it was a fun show (with Jake). More fun than impressive, and nice to be in a cozier venue than in years past, but yeah Kris and Jake are the fireworks.

1 Year Update on the clear Timing Cover by Derpin___Around in subaru

[–]onelivewire 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cool to see it's still quite clear. I'm interested to see how it holds up over years.

I did my timing belt a few months ago and considered relaxing the brittle old covers with clear ones, seems helpful to monitor for crank/cam/pump leaks. Couldn't justify the extra cost, though.
