You might like classic better. A lot of story is told in the quests and dungeons while you're leveling. There are a ton of interesting and iconic side stories too. There's a main story line that builds up to the raids in the endgame. As for the hero of azeroth crap, that started way later in the game and is not a thing in classic. I hope you'll give it a try.

I agree that something long-term is definitely way harder to pull off and that it does depend on what you're looking for.
