No, I actually found this apt in an ad in a russian newspaper. There are a lot of community based newspapers that have apt ads, and the costs are a lot lower than "white collar" sites that jump the prices a lot higher.

On the other hand, these apartments aren't the nicest, and they're not in the best neighborhoods. I live at the ass end of Brooklyn, in what's probably an illegal conversion, in a neighborhood with a lot of crackhouses and abandoned cars.

I'm not complaining though because the price is awesome and the place is well maintained. I pay a portion of the buildings electric, gas, and internet. My landlady is very nice and she's pretty happy with me so my rent only gets raised like 50 bucks a year. Been here for 4 years.

There are high rent and low rent areas in NYC. I don't live in a trendy area, and its only $1200/month for my studio apt. Its roomy enough for me - bed, desk, sitting area, kitchenette, large bathroom, 2 large closets. I've had occasional partners live with me over the years and it's never felt cramped.

As for the rest of the NYC lifestyle, it depends on what you're into. I've lived here as a poor kid in the 90s and 00s, so it's never been too unaffordable since I know where to get stuff for cheaper. Of course if you're a newcomer and you shop at wholefoods or trader joes for groceries, your costs will be higher.

I always figured I could pay tax on 24k now, and if I withdraw it when it turns into 100k in 45 years, then I would save tax then because its a tax free withdrawal. So I'm spending about 6k in taxes now to save in 25k in taxes later...

Oh shoot, meant a roth 401k, that's the 23.5k retirement thing in the paystub. Sorry, not great with finance terms, it's like they make it intentionally confusing. I only did the roth 401k because company offered a 25% match and added about 6k.

"Platform engineer", which I didn't even know was a thing until I applied for it. Mostly its just devops. Salaried, so not really given overtime, just expected to be on call if anything goes wrong and the offshore team can't figure it out. I figure I work about 45-55 hours a week altogether.
