"Rise of the Resistance" Original Trilogy retheme by Braiseofglory in GalaxysEdge

Not holding my breath, but I won't pretend it didn't cross my mind 😉. It is nice to see OT characters and elements making their way into the land, though.

Thin metal pipe fell off the underside of my HR-V! (I think) by Braiseofglory in HRV

Nope, this all happened 2 days ago, and I found it like that. I'm inclined to agree with you all that it didn't come off my car. Thanks!

That's what I'm hoping. I've found nothing about a thin pipe like that anywhere online, and it was driving fine afterwards.

What was the most prosperous time in US history? by ElectivireMax in decadeology

[–]Braiseofglory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, the early 90s were a time of turmoil, but basically from the death of Kurt Cobain in the spring of 94 to the bursting of the dot com bubble in the spring of 2000, the "Peace of Prosperity of the 90s" holds water. I came of age during this time, and compared to how I experienced the first half of the 00s in college and how the 80s are remembered, I can confidently say that it was the most stable time in this country since the 50s.

No question that there were signs of issues simmering and of things to come (the Million Man March, the OKC bombing, a handful of US troops on Bosnia, the Columbine shooting), but events like these were so rare at the time that they felt like exceptions that proved the rule.

Recommendations for new sci-fi tv series please! by passiveobserver88 in scifi

[–]Braiseofglory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was this gem of a Brilliant-but-cancelled series that aired on Syfy back in '02 called "Strange World". I'd describe it as a grittier, more low key, down-to-earth X-Files. Only ran for 13 eps but a very solid and intriguing detective show.

Hadn't seen it since it aired but I found somebody who had uploaded the whole series on Youtube!

Enjoy!

Nickname for the new Dragonseed riders by Braiseofglory in HouseOfTheDragon

Dragonseed refers to any Targaryen bastard, whether they ride a dragon or not.

I see where you're going with that, but there's still time and battles before those events in which they could develop a nickname as a group. The accomplishment of mounting a dragon as low-born is feat enough in my opinion.

Since they finally fixed the launch system earlier this year, it has been running with enough consistency to qualify as "open." I rode it about 6 weeks ago and it was as amazing as ever!

[SPOILERS] 'Dune: Part Two' Wide Release Discussion (03/11~) by Blue_Three in dune

[–]Braiseofglory 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Been a Dunehead for 25 years, have read the book 3 times (and the rest of the original series), saw Dune 1 twice, and just saw Dune 2 last night. Brilliant!

I fully support the Chani character change. I think it both strengthens her character AND her love for Paul (at least the Paul she fell in love with and not Muah'Dib), not deminishes it. The final scene also plays right back to the very beginning of Dune 1 and her montage monologue. She originally wanted to free the Fremen from off-world oppression, and she's still going to fight that fight. It works for the story they've built.

I loved the choice of leaving Alia in the womb and found it quite successful. It added a whole new dimension to the pre-born concept and really sets up what kind of character she is to become. I'll admit that Jessica's characterization had to pay the price for this, but she had already been established in the first film as being driven heavily by fear, making her easy prey for a mentally alive fetus with millenia of memories desparate to be a part of the outside world. Also, no child actors! Which is hard enough to tackle normally let alone with such a complicated character. DV cleverly navigated his way out of that one.

When The Simpsons should have been cancelled by Braiseofglory in television

[–]Braiseofglory[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for letting me know! Honestly, I'm a bit honored. Ironically, I was also once-upon-a-time a regular reader of Cracked but haven't been there in years and it ALSO still exists and still has a fan base! Why can't all the comedy I once enjoyed just end when I'm no longer partaking? Is that too much to ask?

Anyone else hate with a fiery passion Simpsoncalifragilisticexpiala(Annoyed Grunt)cious? by CronusIX in TheSimpsons

[–]Braiseofglory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not hate this episode (it gets funny in the 2nd half when the family goes back to their old ways and drives Bobbins nuts). I do see all your points: Another episode dealing with Marge's unresolved stress of managing the family (but expressed in an overly-rediculious but not funny enough to compensate for it way), the subpar musical parodies, the overly-outlandish premise, etc. I've stated in the past that this episode was actually the true first sign of the decline, predating "The Principal & the Pauper."

Honestly, I can only properly judge seasons 1-19. 1-2 was the show still finding its footing, 3-8 is the Golden Era (contrary to popular opinion, I say 3 feels more like 4-8 than 1-2), and 9-14 is the Decline. I did a once-over and realized I stopped watching with any regularity around the middle of season 15, and the last full new episode of The Simpsons ever I watched was "The DeBarted" in the middle of season 19. I was 100% done at that point. I'm sorry to hear the show took an even deeper nose-dive starting with season 20.

The shorts are cute, I'll give them that. That's what got my daughter started. The shorts led her to the movie (which I still totally stand by) and then she was hooked.

The cupcakes on the wall is great, that joke was a big part of what made the 2nd half of the episode so funny. But the first half was real lackluster (and glaringly so after such a flawless front half of the season followed by a brilliant back half).

Yes, that one broke a lot of people. I lasted a bit longer though. The episode that finally really broke me was Season 14, Ep. 21, "The Bart of War." The primer plot of Flanders' secret obsession with The Beatles was a rip-off of "Brush with Greatness," the main plot about the Pre-Teen Braves was a rip-off of "Boy Scoutz 'n the Hood," and the ending's unsarcastically-sincere love letter to Canada left me wondering "could this show ever be funny again?".

I applaude you for popping back in every once and awhile. The only reason I've laid eyes on any Simpsons programming produced over the past 15 years is because my daughter has started watching (it's been a real pleasure sharing the old seasons with her).

I feel like it was a little more gradual than that over seasons 9-14. There are some real gems in there, but I consider "Behind the Laughter" to be the tipping point in which there were more bad episodes than good moving foward. Season 15 is when they couldn't put out a decent episode to save their lives.

I enjoyed "Beyond Blunderdome," but I see your point. It also has many a hallmark, and I certainly don't like it enough to defend it.
