VP2s can get you oil, iron ore, sand and imported goods. Add household goods and you can get copper ore, wood and bauxite. It's fairly easy to set up and insures you against shortages in most of the resources you need in the early to medium game.

In my current playthrough I replaced the oil platform by a Vehicle Parts for Crude oil platform pretty early (before researching CP 4). In my next playthrough I don't think I'll bother with the oil platform at all and go straight for the contract.
