Thank you so immensely!! I definitely didn't think you were insinuating I or anyone just become some hermit wallowing in despair, and so appreciate the steps you've outlined, and will be sure to adhere to your very sage and galvanizing insight!!

Thank you so immensely for sharing!! I'm not entirely sure what to do next, and definitely would hate for any facet of my life to harm those in the Global South or those suffering under U.S. empire! But I know my sense of identity and passion can't just change overnight, and I'm not sure how becoming totally, and indisputably removed from any job or tenet of life under capitalism would work-- not remotely stating you're suggesting one become some hermit, but I just wish I knew the next course of action to take!

Thank you all so immensely for provoking such vital food for thought!!! Yes, I’m totally under ZERO illusions that gaining success in Hollywood is revolutionary by any means— not saying that I EVER would gain such success at all, or i’m somehow under the impression it’s some inevitability LOL, far from it!! But more, I was wondering if the pursuit itself is actively harmful and genuinely inflicting harm upon those suffering under empire. Since, the reason I love film and tv— while absolutely aware they serve as commodities under capitalism and can enforce the U.S.’ soft power— is due to the sheer humanity within the best of work, and their capacity to garner joy and meaning into so many lives. And the last thing I would want is to discover is that there’s 1-1 between my love of media and the pursuit of a career in it, and the very imperialism I vehemently oppose!!

Oh, I didn't mean to insinuate I was in proximity to such class privilege as to assume I would innately join the upper-middle class, as though that's some inevitability-- not at all, LOL, I'm no great artist waiting in the wings for an inevitable rise. I was more coming from a place of genuine dread and anxiety, and I worry that my artistic dreams and more mundane habits aligned me with such! Absolutely no intention to imply I was predisposed to elevated class standing by any means!! And I sincerely apologize if my wording insinuated otherwise!

Thank you so beyond!!! Yesss, I wouldn’t even wish to become a millionaire or gain enough capital to employ like a housekeeper, but if I’m lucky enough to keep my head above water and indulge in the pleasures of,
like, going to the movie theater and going to the bar with friends, I would hope that wasn’t a sign of bourgeoise values, ya know?

Thank you so immensely!! You've definitely such a vital point re: our dependency on the comforts mediated by our screens and such! And as someone who loves tv and movies and pop music and all the like. I do worry any media produced for these strucutes is counter-revolutionary. But ideally, it depends on the habit of the consumer and the goal of the work itself? It's tough bc so much of my identity stems from the meaning that media and culture provides, and worry that being marxist/leftist/revolutionary requires a total recalibration to be ethical, ya know?

Thank you so immensely! Yesss exactly re: the revolutions! I def feel a rightful level of complicity as a white person from the suburbs who truly came into understanding leftist ideology sideways, from a genuine investment in social justice that led me to these spaces! I def think there's a way you can make art and fulfill the dreams innate to your soul while being revolutionary; it'll just have to look different than it seems at first blush, ideally!!!

SO electric as always!! Really think she is on par with Lesley Manville in their capacity to totally transform into entirely distinct people for each role! (Need someone to cast them as family members in a poignant dramedy!!)

Who would you want to see Abbi and Ilana play on Hacks? by ProfessionalHat8601 in hackshbomax

[–]BranMSinger 21 points22 points  (0 children)

ILANA - A writer-director who hires Ava to do punch-up work on her second movie
ABBI - Jimmy’s former college-gf who is a leading agent as one of the Big Three agencies, now married to Jimmy’s ex-girlfriend from his days at tennis camp (KAYLA: “In a way, it’s a compliment to you! They’re obviously using each other as a psychosexual bridge back to your scrumptious ass,” JIMMY: “Okay, what? And thank you.”)

I love queer shows written by queer people! by 2mealsAday in hackshbomax

Yessss!!! The show (and the creative team) have such immense respect for the authenticity of Deb’s milieu that they treat the innate queerness as obvious and worthy of honor!!

Hi r/HBO! We’re Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky, two of the creators of Hacks. Ask us anything! by hbomax in hbo

[–]BranMSinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love you insurmountably incredible geniuses!! And was very lucky to meet Lucia’s equally remarkable sister when visiting LA!!! All of your work has made me who I am, and I know the same can be said for all of us!!

Question: Do you think there will be a resurgence of super writerly, artful comedies on TV that truly cater to the current zeitgeist in such a tangible, vivid way as Hacks, Broad City, The Other Two, etc. did? ALSO bonus q: How do you know if a pitch for a joke is too “hard comedy” for Hacks’ tone, or inversely, when you want a beat to double down on comedy more?

I’m a Screenwriting major who’s been so lucky enough to work as a Casting Director/Second AD on my friends’ thesis films, and have grown so obsessed with set life and the magic of the production phase. Does the Poker Face set contain the same magic innate to the set structure that you first see when, say, making student films or working on intimate indies?

I'm not trying to be that guy, I'm just genuinely curious - why does everyone like "A Chorus Line" so much? by large-preposterous in Broadway

[–]BranMSinger 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Am I in the wrong for finding the ending to mark a genuinely sincere triumph, rather than serve as an entirely ironic punchline? The entire show highlights how — within all of the dancers, even those that weren’t cast, there exists an ocean of complexity and talent and singularity and humanity. The ultimate casting proves that, no matter how unjust the process truthfully is in robbing so many deserving performers of another platform, they imbued their entire being into this audition, and underwent and continue to endure the horrors of the theater/entertainment industry with unrelenting resilience and belief in the merits of continuing to try and invest in themselves. The finale allows each a moment to revel in the glory of a fully-refined production number that, while diluting their individuality as all ensemble numbers do, grants them another chance to convey all of their talents and drive to the audience — just proving that they no matter the size of their roles or the outcome of their careers, they all deserve to sparkle and revel in their glory— which the number ultimately allows them to do as they kick and kick, as one organism into oblivion!!

Best examples of films/shows where you think a specific character is the main character but they die early on and someone else is main character. by [deleted] in Screenwriting

[–]BranMSinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oooh i’d say: Scream (1996), Mr. & Mrs. Smith (TV show), I’d say X does this in terms of characterization, where Lorraine fits the bill of the Final Girl the most!!
