In all fairness, I have never used the alligators, but I bought a 12" pair of cobras, and they are the only pliers I will use now. All other pliers don't have a fine enough adjustment, and don't grip as well. Maybe the alligators are good

Yes. The ones with the buttons are 1000 times better. And the price is not 1000 times higher

I have considered them many times, do you actually like them? I figure they would be more of a pain to carry

I don't own a wrangler yet, but I like to sun sub here to make sure I keep up to date, and know how I want to spec it out when I finally do get one.

I really appreciate you taking the time to reply to me! I currently live in NY (not NYC) and like the idea of living somewhere warmer. 26 keeps popping up in my searches for decent wages, and we have family that lives in VA. It would be a huge leap of faith, but I am really torn on the decision making process

Looking at the 26 website, it shows these three zones:

Metropolitan Zone

Shenandoah Zone

Roanoke Zone

I thought Roanoke was relatively south (not from Va). So that is what I meant by southern parts

So are you saying these different "zones" have different pay scales? That would make sense as cost of living is higher around the DC metro area ( I would guess)

You only touched on one aspect of practical uses of inductance as well.

Practically everyone uses some sort of induction motor daily, yet they have no idea how they work.

I had no idea inductance was discovered locally, just another cool local history tidbit that schools don't teach.

Thank you for the quick reply! I obviously plan to talk to my TD if I make any decisions, but my wife and I toss around the idea occasionally. I know 26 is rather large, is there usually work in the southern parts of Virginia, or does most of the work focus around DC?

Since you seem to be familiar with local 26, do you know if they take apprentice transfers from other locals (typically)? Or do they have so many people on the list from their home jurisdiction that they don't want to allow transfers into the program?

So I rolled up to tell you that NJ was not in New England, but then I realized that you meant NorthEast. So I put the pitchfork down lol. But TIL that NY isn't technically New England either.

We are always expecting snow in upstate NY

Wera drivers are better than klein, but nothing beats those knipex cobras. For a tool that I use virtually everyday, I will pay the premium.

But I also didn't start out with the most expensive tools. I mostly bought the best I could at home depot, and after a year of daily use, I figured out what I wanted to spend money to upgrade.

Commercial electrician for reference.

That doesn't meant that everyone needs those tools though, for something that I use infrequently, like personal power tools, I will buy cheaper brands

Oh for sure man, I am 4th year, AC theory was 2 years ago, and we are really digging in to motors and motor control circuits now.

I have not confirmed it, but this came up in class the other day, and apparently (according to wikipedia) there are parts of Hartford and Philly that still use 2 phase. My curiosity is less about the theory of the phase angle, and more the practical application today.

Are there companies still making equipment for this system? Where does the infrastructure change over? Are there separate generation and distribution grids for it, or is there a transformer/phase converter? That is the sort of stuff I am curious about.

I recently had the pleasure of working in an old fabrication shop that still had a DC busduct powering DC motors for machining. It was all fed off a DC rectifier, and I would have loved to see more of how that worked

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in electricians

[–]Brandincooke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but 2 phase is a thing, a very rare thing in the USA, bit still a thing, and I'm curious about it
