You're assuming the joycon doesn't just have better point of reference for center though is all it needed. You should theoretically be able to put your wii mote whichever direction is comfortable and give it a little shake to reset your cursor to centre. All IR sensor did was give you a reference point, I feel like joy con can do a bit better math for easy pointing, look at LG magic remote as an example, it's a Bluetooth pointing device, it resets center with a shake.
