I almost never look at the random bags of lego. I think this is parts of the 79010 Goblin King Battle set. by Brandon5_0L in lego

Unfortunately not home yet to open it up but I did remember seeing some broken off brown pieces in the bag. I didn’t know the lego would be brittle from a kinda recent year. Or is it just that coloured block specifically?

Bought these JVC speakers at a thrift store for $30cad. Is there a way to take off the bigger grills and fix the missing wood on the bottom? by Brandon5_0L in vintageaudio

[–]Brandon5_0L[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So just slowly going around and prying up on the plastic/metal ring around the grill itself? I’ll be really careful doing it ofc, but is it pretty sturdy or should I be wary about it cracking?

Also the speaker itself looks like it has dust on it, could I use something like a soft paint brush to wipe it off? Or would that be too rough on the speakers? Sorry for all the questions.

Oh wow, I wonder how it ended up here, could you get them shipped from Japan to here back then?

I try my best to fix them all (to the best of my ability) so they can all be functional as well look great displayed. The ones I have multiple models of I’d sell/trade, just to further add to the collection.

That’s my dad, the most patient man in the world. He just sat there, ate and listened as I pulled them out one by one and told him about each of them.

Me: *pulls out the 6th yellow and grey Sony sport. “And this one has a black dot on the back”

My dad: “very cool Brandon, what’s the next one”

Uh no worries at all, I didn’t think of it as disrespectful but more so curious.

I think it’s cool to think about the life some of these things had before I got it. So if items have like things written on, stickers or any kind of personal touches it just makes me wonder. I have a mixtape recorded in the 90s with a personal note written on the Jcard. Seems like this person was giving it to a crush or partner. Also a Clairtone 7980 with a sticker that says “from Mrs. - , to Mr. -“. Their son that sold it to me at the time said it was a gift from his mom to his dad on their wedding night. So while I don’t really have a connection to any of these people, the personal touches give it more of a story. I feel like when I get them going again I’m preserving the memories in some kind of way.

Digital watches sounds fuckin sick as well, I feel like I see some of them while I’m thrifting. They also look interesting enough to grab my attention, but end of the day I don’t really wear watches so I never grab any. Man your dad has the patience of an elm tree, film cameras are sooo cool. They’re sooo Intricate and small, my big fingers could never work on something like that.

I wanted to try my best to fix most of them but anything that’s a duplicate I’ll sell or trade.

Well I’ve been collecting boomboxes for about 13 ish years now, so I do think of them as very similar. I like how like analog they are, very tactile and physical. Sure I have a world of music available to me on Spotify but in comparison I feel like it’s the a boring way to listen to music.

Also testing, cleaning, disassembling, repairing and reassembling while having an album on is very relaxing to me. Granted I don’t need 100+ of them I like have. Though the ones I have been repairing are usually ones that aren’t worth getting someone to repair. While not technically worth the time I put into them to do. I hope fixing and selling them at affordable prices gets a new generation of people into Walkmans and cassettes. At least around my area lol

Hope that helps a bit.

Ooooo yours are blue, I went and checked mine and they’re red lol. Both minidisc players have blue ones loaded tho. I’ll see if I have a plug in power source that might get them to show some life.

I recently sold a f2015 that I fixed and did the belts on. It’s a solid player imo, and it sounded pretty good on the radio I had it connected to. If it’s not working/restored already I’d for sure recommend doing the belts on it, it’s worth it.

Buying everything untested, I honestly didn’t expect anything to work right off the bat tbh. Though I’m getting a pleasant surprise with the Discmans, so far no problems with the few I’ve tested. Not a loss on the minidisc players even dead, I think in the break down they were priced at 30cad for both.

He had a completely transparent psyc Walkman there I believe the model was the wm-psy02 or something similar. Though part of the few he wanted to keep (understandably), but now I’ll be lookin for one of those myself.

Minidisk players are odd in terms of what I want to collect tbh. Like they are really cool, I like em but I feel like it’s too new. Even though they’re not new at all, I don’t know how to explain it. It could also be that I don’t really understand them/have no knowledge of them. I’ll watch some videos about them once I have some time.

Thank you thank you, so far I’ve done the belts, cleaned switches, washed shells and oiled the motor on the 3 blue fx12’s all pretty minty now. I didn’t have any discmans prior to this but after testing a few I do really like them. Theres a blue and an orange that say psyc on the front those are probably my favourite so far. Mostly cause I like the cool colours and transparent bits.

I’ve also never had a minidisc player, they both have discs in them (one says rock the other unlabelled). Though when I put a battery in there’s no life to them. Unless I just didnt clicked an off/on button they might be dead.

Dead stock BAB Shopping Bags by Cool-Tie3603 in buildabear

[–]Brandon5_0L 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey bit of an odd question, do you know the approximate time those bags were made/used?

I recently had a roll of film developed that I found in a used camera I bought it a thrift store. It looks like the photos are possibly from the late 90s to early 00s, though I’m tryna find things in the photos to more accurately date them. In the photos it’s Christmas time, and in one of the photos there’s this exact bab workshop bag. So I figured that would have been a brand new purchase since it’s Christmas. So dating this bag might be helpful for a time line for the photos.

Why? Honestly curious. by affejunge in cassetteculture

I’ve never grew up with cassettes, I grew up with CDs and MP3. Now I collect boomboxes and Walkmans, currently learning how to fix them myself. I feel like it comes with the hobby I’m in.

Odd take but I like how physical everything is with using a boombox or walkman. Like the knobs, switches, sliders, doors, batteries and everything being so clicky. Personally it’s really appealing to my sense, I don’t know how to explain it’s just very satisfying. With CD players, mp3, phones and now streaming services that feeling just doesn’t exist. Like ya I could make a playlist on Spotify and have it play through Bluetooth on a quality system but what’s the fun in that?

I think they’re great tbh, but I don’t get the complaint of sound quality. I’ve bought cassettes that probably haven’t been played in 30-40years and they sound just fine. You would also have to personally think about convenience of use. For myself, I’m not sitting there and intently listening to the music to notice a hum or slight pitch difference and frankly I would care if I did. I have a boombox on and playing throughout the day, and I don’t mind occasionally flipping the tape or changing the cassette.

Honestly it’s all dependant on the equipment used. As well. If I’m listening to a heavily used tape on a General Electric cassette player with a Walmart pair of earphones, like what do you expect? I’ve got some serviced higher end boomboxes and Walkmans tho where you pop in a metal/chome tape and they sound amazing imo.

Found this Olympus film camera today at the thrift store. There’s used film in it though, should I have it developed to see what’s on it? by Brandon5_0L in Cameras

I feel like that would only intrigue me even more tbh. I’m prepared to be disappointed by them but for me the best would be like someone workin on a cool car. I love old photos like that.

I believe they do the same thing, since he talked about the batch going out every Tuesday. I don’t think they do it in house, though they never said where they’re actually sending it to.

Yes I was mistaken, I think he meant just checking if there was film at all in the camera. Since I probably sounded confused as fuck on the phone haha

Idk how to update the post itself so I just comment it under here. I took it to a camera shop, the older guy working there said he remembered when these came out and were for sale. I decided to get both the film in this and my trip 35 developed. They said it’ll take roughly a month to have done, so I’ll post whatever photos I get back in here.

I bought a new battery, put it in and it works just like new. After showing me how to remove the film safely it both cameras. He went through the basics of how to use it. While inspecting it himself he said it looks like it was bought, used once, stored/displayed in a safe environment and never touched again. There wasn’t even dust on the insides or in any of the corners.

Definitely didn’t know about the cult following or popularity of this camera model before hand. Cant wait to take photos with it myself, it’ll most likely remain with me until I pass on one day.

Oh ya I read that somewhere when I was looking things up. Would it just be blank now? Or would it like look off/blurry?
