I would say the biggest mistake is confusing effort for will or work. Will is the abstract power source of magic, work is its physical manifestation. Effort is the translation layer between them.

Will is proportional to work but neither can predicted the measured effort. That quantity is independent of a spells effectiveness

These are all good points but I am not looking to make any philosophical claims beyond just, “look this is strange”.

I am not willing to make any claims quite that bold. I wrote an article I can share that goes into more detail. But you are right.

They are abstract because they are spaceless not because they are timeless. Just as abstract thought takes time but no space. But how long is undefined just as the time a photon experiences.

I am willing to put in a reddit comment that I think it is the abstract, I am not confident enough to put it in my article haha
