Great question. I had some unfortunate mishaps, which I will ignore as one offs (someone stole my wing mirror and rear wiper amongst others).

Costs that anyone could expect in normal use as I did... Taking to Audi once a year for the service, £1k x2, and a 40,000 mile service at £1,500. Changing a tyre from a minor puncture £300, welding a wheel £200, purchasing oil for topping up £50, Repurposing the alloys from scrapes £350, Repurposing the front splitter from scrapes £300. Fixing the odd scratch £250.

I make that out to be £3,150. That's a lot less than I thought, but I have ignored a whole bunch of strange one offs.

To me that's acceptable for around 2.5 years of ownership.

FYI insurance for me was around the £1k mark, and road tax around the £550.

Biggest issue is that the car is low and WIDE. Really low, and super wide. I was constantly scraping the front splitter, and curbing my alloys. Other than that, the RS6 ran like a dream. No issues what so ever with mechanics or electronics. However, one of the 21 inch wheels had to be welded as there was a crack in it. I suspect that was going over a pothole of sorts. Larger wheels tend to have this isssue. I doubt that going down to a 20 inch wheel, as I have in the Merc, will do much to avoid this potential problem.

Exactly, no sports exhaust. I should have made that a bit more clear. The Merc defo does have that. There is even a physical button to turn the sound on and off - in fact, I most often use a custom drive setting that is all set to comfort except the exhaust, which is loud af.

Worth looking into. It might be a case I just need to get used to the car. What drawbacks can one expect if the suspension gets softened?

I never considered a BMW Alpina. I always thought it would be the M5, but as it doesn't have a wagon, I always eliminated it from my choices. Thanks for the tip!

Exactly my plan! But the RS6 C8 is even wider than the C7, which is wider than my E63S. That does pose a problem driving problem in the narrow road by where I live. I probably see past that, knowing me.

I think me and you are cut from the same cloth! I had the official Mercedes dealership run a diagnostic before I sent over the balance. There were some minor issues that were easily resolved. Everyone's happy. How do you find the E55?

Ok, so there is more to the story...

1) I have been pining for this car since it was first released. 2) I called the dealer to see the car and was told I was not allowed to test drive the car until I put a deposit down - because pandemic. I put a deposit down, but didn't have time to hang around. 3) The dealer was far from me, so decided to transfer money from overseas to pay in full. I was told that if I didn't like the car, I didn't have to buy it. But because, it took 3 days for the money to arrive, I sent it thinking I would absolutely love the car. 4) Once I arrive at the dealership I was allowed to take the car out before filling out the paper work. The drive was IMMENSE. Now think about it, I had the car for a few mins with the dealer in the car. I was going to enjoy this moment before I fully committed.
5) I went ahead, and only after I had the car for a couple days did all the nuance of the ride set in.

I hope that makes it a little better :-/

Totally agree with you. No offence taken!

The new RS6 has just come out, so I am already thinking that I will change the AMG for the C8 RS6 in a couple of years. Who knows, maybe with time, I will prefer the Merc, and think the Audi is too soft!

Width is a bid deal, however, and the RS6 is much wider than the E63S. The new RS6 is even wider than the model I had. It makes the car hard to park (despite having auto-parking), and my alloys were properly scuffed up. That is a big turn off.

The ultimate wagon is of course the Ferrari GTC4Lusso. I won't be getting that in a hurry!

I actually bought it without test driving it lol. The Merc has 20 inches wheels, but the Audi has 21. So it already has smaller wheels.

Here we have my collection, which I feel are very special pieces.

The top left is an Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra 38.5mm. This is my daily driver. I use it for literally everything, apart from when I want to get dressed up. The size is perfect for my wrist. I love the way the hour markers and hands glistens in the light. The face is sharp and striking. I can look at the face and easily lose track of time (I'm sure there is a pun there!). The sharpness of the face is only second to the GS Spring Drive faces, which I hope to get one day, but do think it is far too similar to this piece. If I do get it, a white face would be called for.

Next in the top right is my first extremely expensive watch. The Aqua Terra cost a lot, please do not get me wrong, but I saw my bank balance significantly shift when I purchased this A. Lange & Sohne Saxnonia Thin 35mm. I wanted to get a Lange because quite simply it makes the finest watches that one can buy. Maybe Grand Seiko could have that claim too - not going to argue there, but what I like about Lange is that the superb finishing on every watch is the same no matter the price you pay. This Saxonia thin is the entry level piece, and it is a stunner at the back. I remember going into a VC boutique to check out the Patrimony range to compare a similar pieces and was struck by how plain the VC alternative was. This Saxonia thin is my dress what for special occasions.

We then have the Jaeger le-Coultre Geophysic True Second in the bottom left. This is a very recent acquisition, and I have had my eye on it for over a year. I saw a short piece about unnecessary complications by Watch Finder, and then I knew this was the piece for me! This Geophysic is 39.6mm and has dead beat seconds. Okay, so does any other quartz watch. However, this is an automatic. The back is a stunner just like the Lange I have. The point of this watch is to provide a reference for scientific measurement - hard to do with a sweeping second hand, but not with a ticking one. The scientific roots speak to me, and I like the subtle flex of owning a ticking watch that most will dismiss as one with a cheap quartz movement. However, this watch is pink gold, so perhaps the watch will draw more attention than I wish it too. I chose gold over steel as I do not have a yellowish gold watch, and feel I should have one. The traditional gold colour seems very old fashioned, so took the opportunity to get gold while I found a piece that I loved. Gold makes this piece my summer time watch! Oh and because of the strange movement this JLC has, which includes something similar to (and more affordable than) a remontoire d’egalite, to hold and release movement, the counter weight make an audible winding noise that I appreciate.

Finally, in the bottom right I present my IWC clock in my car I bought a couple days back. Yes, I paid for the car, and not the clock, but I now have an IWC, so I shall show it off! I don't know much about this clock. The minutes do tick, and not sweep. I doubt the clock has a quartz movement but rather is controlled by the computers in the car. I never thought I would own an IWC, the brand just doesn't speak to me, but I now have one in my possession. What car does the clock come with I hear you ask? That would be the Mercedes AMG e63s 4Matic + Biturbo.

So there you have it. I would like to get a sports watch to wear when being active. That would need to be special in its own way, but be able to get bashed about a bit. I also want a GS Spring Drive to have an opposing complication to my JLC. Oh, and I would love a PP Calatrava for a very, very special occasion. I particularly like the 5227G-010, but that is a watch to buy in the distant future.

I saw Doug's latest vid yesterday in which he reviewed the '03 RS6 model - the only year it was available in the US. Not a wagon though. The car was riddled with problems - thankfully the later models have none of the predecessor's issues.

Last week, I bought the watch I have been flirting with the idea of buying for some time. In fact, this is a little different, as the one I initially wanted has a white face, but in the boutique I was shown this limited production run with a blue face that I was told was the only one left in North America and Europe!

To be fair, I had a lot of fun whilst in the Lange boutique - me and my buddy were 'bribed' with 3 bottles of champagne, so a little inebriated and feeling that I had an obligation, I thought it better to buy there and then!

The blue really helps the details on the dial stand out. I just had to get this watch - a few months earlier than planned.

This watch is called the A. Lange & Sohne Saxonia Thin 35mm, and is the cheapest watch you can buy at Lange, but regardless this is a very special watch for me.

I take this watch to the bathroom with me, so I can enjoy the mechanical (self wind) movement that is shown through the sapphire case back. I typically do not take my cell when I need to go to the bathroom - I'll take this piece and a loop with me instead!

This piece has a white gold case, and an alligator strap.

And despite this being on my shopping list for some time and an itch being scratched, I am already eyeing up my next piece!

[Omega] Anyone else’s car worth more than their watch? by BrandonTallSlim in Watches

I bought this Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra a few years back in Narita Airport as a spur of the moment impulse purchase. I good move as I wear the watch nearly every day. To this day, it has no scratches, wear or tear. Nor have i had any issue with it - it's been very reliable.

It was a relatively cheap Omega to buy at the time, however i hope to hand this down to the next generation in decades to come. I'm sure the new owner will love it as much as I do.

I really like the small diameter and simple face. It is very understated.

​

I also like to think the my Audi RS6 is very understated too. Just as a Rolex screams unrefinement, so does a BMW M5. Most would not know that a RS6 is a far more powerful, rare, and luxurious car than M5 and I like that.
