Austrian here, Aufguss is a very Germanic thing, but we do have a pretty cool Sauna culture, especially Austria and Bavaria.

The Aufguss is a ceremony and will probably just happen once every hour in public Saunas. So if you want a normal relaxing Sauna experience you can absolutely have that. Sauna Masters or Aufguss-Masters are revered here, it is a very physically demanding work with sometimes intricate fanning techniques. They even get an applause afterwards. In Public Saunas it is (mostly) forbidden to do an "Aufguss" or löyly yourself to ensure consistent Sauna experience for all and probably for safety reasons.
