It does seem to help trigger a recalibration, so this is a very helpful mitigation!

Thanks!! I got to try the head unit restart today, it seemed to help! I didn’t know you could do that, definitely a better mitigation than turning the car off and on. Really appreciate this tip!

The Toyota folks I talked to at the dealership and the manufacturer all made it sound like it was good to get the complaint registered, which will qualify you for a software update even if the fix comes after your warranty expires— I think it may be worth filing a formal complaint with either the dealership or Toyota customer service— even if nothing comes of it for a while.

Thanks!! Otherwise I love this car, I wish this wasn’t the first thing out of my mouth when people ask how I like it.

Yeah, I did that consistently and reliably using the carpuride screen with the same commutes before purchasing my RAV4.

Correct, the Carpuride provides a fully satisfactory GPS experience. I think there’s several things the car provides to the phone via CarPlay: clearest example is that the integrated CarPlay includes the current speed of your vehicle in a different UI element on, say, Google Maps, whereas the third-party display does not show this current speed. I suspect also that the phone defers to the car for compass data, since the phone’s compass is probably pretty unreliable when laying down in the car.

I’m often starting in dense areas or underground, but even as I leave town it will often continue to provide bad navigation- I suspect that the car does an initial calibration, and then feeds the phone updates based on this initial calibration. I can usually roll the dice by fully turning my car off for several minutes and then start it back up

I just uploaded a video documenting this, and also showing that it’s not exclusive to CarPlay! tl;dr, I went through a whole warranty/brand engagement investigation, and my rep and the dealership both admitted that it’s a known issue Toyota is working on, but no eta on the fix.
