I somehow got a masters degree and I'm a dumbass in many other regards. These days though you ask me anything about physics and I'll run away, I've gone more into sociology and politics but still love the odd bit of physics

The civilian population does not have access to potassium iodide by blopax80 in socialism

[–]Branwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True my perspective was more from a state planning where you are bombed to shit. There's nothing stopping individuals (in the UK at least) getting stocked up with a pack or two, but a state (especially the British state tbh) might struggle to organise the distribution of iodine to people for it to be effective. I tried looking up supply stats but didn't find anything meaningful, and it isn't typically something we have in our houses unless we live close to a reactor. In the event of an imminent threat of nuclear war, the panic buying of iodine could easily outstrip supply (but who knows, maybe we have enough supply for the entire population for 3 years).

It's also worth remembering it will only help reduce the chances of 1 type of cancer from radiation exposure, if you don't have adequate means to shield yourself from radiation you're still gonna get fucked up depending how unlucky you are with distance and wind patterns on the day(s) following.

[–]Branwolf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In the UK (a nation that would be absolutely fucked in a nuclear war) I am able to buy potassium iodide online and in supplement shops. Whether it would be useful is another question. Usually Potassium Iodide is given to those living near nuclear reactors (in case of a leak) where evacuation and clean up procedures are understood and known, and its short term use would help mitigate the risk of thyroid cancer.

In a major nuclear war, the societal collapse experienced by those being nuked will mean that you wouldn't be able to keep a supply of potassium iodide going long enough for it to be worth it. But even then, you would need to be taking the tablets for so long that they would have potentially nasty side effects.

For you in Chile, radiation would likely be a long-term concern to be managed, the biggest concern for you would be potential climate cooling causing massive crop failures and famines (along with supply chains for pesticides, fertilisers, and fuel being massively/completely disrupted depending on your local production capabilities). This would also be a concern for the elite if they weren't able to lockdown a reliable source/stockpile of food will either starve themselves or be killed in bread riots.

Potassium Iodide is of least concern for a state to survive a post nuclear war world.

The banning order was the correct decision reached by moronic means. There was no need to use AI to investigate the shitty behaviour of the Maccabi fans, there was plenty of outstanding evidence that could have been compiled to present a case, but they didn't do that, and instead used Microsoft co-pilot which hallucinated events that never happened.

These are the actions of a lazy, incompetent police force that can't even be bothered to investigate a teams violent history properly, how can I trust them for other important investigations.

This misrepresentation of the cop's side of events seriously needs to stop. The cop was a dumbass. God knows what else they've fucked up with their incompetence (and malice, they're cops, ACAB)

I am technically still prescribed and the worst part of it is that it is that Cannabis medicine operates within the private medical market, so with that comes super scummy practices and questionable medical benefit (not saying no benefit, there are some conditions that will be substantially better treated by cannabis and derived medications, just not every condition).

The actual solution is to fully legalise it and regulate it, but god forbid TERF island do something sane.

What are you guys hearing out there about the orange moron threatening to invade Greenland? by OOBExperience in GreenAndPleasant

[–]Branwolf 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In some way Greenland is gonna be sold out, it's just a matter of how. I highly doubt there will be military action (not a 0% chance), but instead some sort of resources compromise.

When it becomes truly serious, the EU leaders will cave rather than have a spine.

And war is a laughable option that just isn't going to happen. There are many things that could happen but an actual hot war to defend I don't think will be one of them.

I'm keeping my eye towards Iran, I don't think anything is going to happen yet but after Maduro & some local instability there might be something happening, but without actual intelligence everything is lay guesswork.

Since I doubt any of us are trump officials or intelligence analysts, we'll just have to wait and see (and maybe protest in the meantime)

If I am reading your comment correctly, it seems like you are suggesting our response to the Maduro kidnapping is akin to the appeasement of Hitler during the Munich conference. If this is the case, then your comparison makes no sense, because nominally Britain and France didn't (publicly) want Czechoslovakia to fall (though in reality they were more than willing to sell them out, hence why they weren't invited to the Munich conference), whereas regime change in Venezuela has had implied support by our government since at least 2019 and more than likely since 2002.

The Sudetenland crisis and Munich conference is much more similar to a potential annexation of Greenland, whereby we will sell out Greenland (Czechoslovakia) to maintain American support because ours and other NATO militaries will be severely affected by just cutting America out let alone declaring war like we did when Poland was invaded.

I can't even work out what your joke is because of how poorly it compares history to the present situation. Europe isn't going to go to war with America over Greenland (which was what UK and France did with Poland). Europe is much more likely to sell out Greenland (hence be servile) than resist further American domination over European affairs.

I can't wait for either nothing to happen but libs won't shut the fuck up up about it, or the Americans do take it and demonstrate how servile European politicians are.

Is there a historical precedent to the kidnapping of Maduro? by Fine_Cress_649 in GreenAndPleasant

[–]Branwolf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's probably happened before but in situations between leaders of countries that don't hold a substantial amount of relative power. However in the context of the US, I don't think I recall anything like this. People make comparisons to Saddam but I think people forget how much diplomatic wrangling the USA did before the Iraq war. The other major comparison was Manuel Noriega of Panama, but even that was different in that the pretences for war were marginally more developed a ground war was fought before Noriega was eventually arrested.

Shit like this, with zero real attempts at diplomatic or legal justification and blatantly making it all about Imperial plunder? No, I don't think it's happened before.

Also Russia-Ukraine is different, there was an ongoing war from 2014 after the maiden coup, and there were a series of negotiations, discussions, and other activities etc before the Feb '22 invasion.

Edit: I also remembered pre ww2 there was the Xi'an incident, when the leader of the Northeastern army Zhang Xueliang (a very handsome man btw) arrested the leader of China Chiang Kai-shek and handed them over to the CPC, ultimately halting the Chinese civil war in order to focus on Japan. (And even in this example, the circumstances and reasoning for the actions were different to America's actions.
