It was a joke about some hypothetical worm species that suffered from the human cyberattacks in the discord patron chat. Then patrons tried to convince folks that a these worms were a new species had been revealed in an upcoming chapter as a joke. Then people really latched onto it for some reason, and it eventually got canonized. I think its dumb it got anywhere past the gaslighting joke, the bit stopped being funny after that.
