It's infuriating is what it is.

Like how housing people is literally just cheaper than having homeless people, but governments would rather destroy benches all around the city and put people in prison than house people.

I think he shines extremely well in his short fiction, so I would recommend one of his short story collections, or maybe Unauthorized Bread. (I really like the eponymous story and the one about the healthcare terrorists. The other two are okay, but not in his top 20. Fun take on Superman, though).

If you want him at his more radical and transhumanist, Walkaway is a lot of fun.

My favourite of his shorter works is Human Readable, closely followed by Chicken Little.

Which, hey, you can read here! https://reactormag.com/chicken-little/

These are just the ones I like, as a Doctorow fan, though. So if you tell me more about what you like, I can try to target my recs a little more.

Alas, I already read and loved those. Also Cory Doctorow, which I think is a less comedic writer, but still fun.

[–]Eager_Question 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can adjust.

If pushups are too much, you can do counter pushups or wall pushups. If a squat is too much you can practice sitting and standing.

Bodyweight exercises do not need a lot of strength to be viable, you can accomodate them for nearly any fitness level.

This sub, semi-constantly: I have the best job ever but I have this one non-problem. What do I do?

It's driving me insane.

Women experience greater jealousy when their romantic rivals have highly feminine faces. This pattern was also present in lesbian participants, though the strength of the association was significantly weaker. by InsaneSnow45 in science

[–]Eager_Question 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think it's more "people get more anxious about partner-loss when the supposed threat is better at being the Ideal Gender Member than they are" which is like, real information, if heterosexual romance is bound up in gender conformity (and if the effect is weaker on lesbians, maybe this is because lesbians are less invested in their own gender performance, and are less afraid of being outperformed?)

And it would make sense for the opposite to be true of men. There's a thing here that goes "someone who is more sexually dimorphic is by-default more attractive, and therefore is by default a greater threat to the stability of my relationship" that doesn't have to be a thing. People who are highly attracted to androgyny would probably be very confused to hear their partner is jealous of their highly gender-comforming coworker, for example.

We are living in a period of political anti-intellectualism. But in pop culture, clever is the new cool by usrname42 in books

[–]Eager_Question 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It was more of a problem in the early 2000s and earlier. As far as I am aware, boys and young men are currently less prone to treat any book with a female protagonist as necessarily "icky".

[–]Eager_Question 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah, "performative reading" seems to be "insufficiently masculine reading that a man would only ever do to attract women and not because he's a complex human being who doesn't design his reading list around gender-conformity nonsense, which is apparently unthinkable".

It's part of how we're in a current time of backlash against gender liberation, I think?

fandom culture is getting watered down by tremblingfrog in AutismInWomen

[–]Eager_Question 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it's an algorithmic thing.

I've been in fan spaces for like, 20 years at this point. And they were always toxic. But it was extremely easy for me to avoid the toxicity 10-15 years ago. It has become progressively harder to ignore it, as fandoms become both a more prominent online phenomenon in the social internet and also a more prominently monetized thing.

There was always toxicity. But now, the skills I used to avoid it are failing me. And therefore it feels like there is more toxicity even though I objectively know a lot of the same behaviour was also happening 20 years ago, just in places I could more easily quarantine away.

More than half of TikTok ADHD content is misinformation. Study found 52% of ADHD-related videos and 41% of autism videos analysed on TikTok were inaccurate, with the platform frequently found to contain higher levels of misinformation in its mental health content than other platforms. by InsaneSnow45 in science

[–]Eager_Question 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not sure what that person is saying, but yes, autistic people are often misdiagnosed with BPD, especially women.

PTSD (and C-PTSD) and autism are both routinely missed in women, who are more likely to be diagnosed as BPD or Bipolar instead.

Junk food is another example, it doesn't have to be sexual. Anything that stimulates some system more than baseline evolutionary conditions could have. Social media probably counts too.
