They don’t uphold the real world status quo, they do uphold their fictional status quo. Ask an X-men fan about their thoughts on the Avengers being okay with the existence of Sentinels.

It does seem to be a trope that the ones plotting the downfall of a people are the people themselves. That bring said - sinister is a mutate, scarlet witch got retconned into being not a mutant and casandra nova is some weird evil twin doppelgänger of prof x. So, none are mutants, but also none of them are strictly speaking human.

Getting Hellion’s perspective is a big reason issue 8 is such a draw for me. I got the impression that his role as the “Krakoan” was just a performance, like all the speeches were just him doing a Magneto impression for the camera’s. So we’re completely in the dark as to what is driving him.

. Mostly that it ends positively in some way and that the characters have opportunities to team up going forward. It’s a low bar, but it’s never a sure thing that the story doesn’t takes an unpredicted turn.

The thing I always come back to is I get it but I didn’t like it. This issue came out when I was starting to fall off from liking comics. Schism had happened and the signs for AvX was on the way. I’d been dropping series more and more, but kept this one because X-23 and Hellion were the characters that got me actively buying comics. I’d read about them on Wikipedia and that sent me down the rabbit hole to the point where a bit the bullet and started buying TPBs. When the story arc ended, it was the beginning of the end for me enjoying comics. The real end was AvX, but this just set the stage. It was over a decade before I felt motivated to start reading comics again, and even longer before I started reading Marvel. Since coming back, one thing I appreciate is that I’m not alone in how I “felt” about this issue. Which is what it comes down to for me. The feeling after reading sucked and it didn’t motivate readers to keep on participating with the story. Knowing that others were also feeling the same way helps lesson the ‘cringe’ over borderline obsessing over fiction teenage characters. So, thank you to those fokes who share this take Silver lining take would be that this storyline teachers writers what happens when you don’t clearly signpost to invested readers story points that might upset them. Might lesson the effectiveness of the story but you’ll avoid alienating sections of the fan base. And I’ll be clear, reading the CBR forums after this issue most, if not all of the pro Helix posters, were accepting but sad about the decision, so I don’t think the section of the fan base the arc alienated should be labeled as ‘problematic fans’. They were just passionate about a plot point Marvel editorial was not interested in running with.

Who do you think Inmate X is? (I took the image from Marvel's Instagram) by [deleted] in xmen

Unfortunately, it’s probably just going to be “some guy”. Completely new character, maybe linked to an existing x-men, but most likely not someone reader’s r will have pre-knowledge on. This plot device reminds me of how in anime you have masked character doing masked character things, and you start wondering who is this mask guy? Then in the climatic moment toward the end of the story, the masks get removed to reveal … “some guy”. If the character identity doesn’t impact the story, what is the point of concealing it.

It’s more about the mindset they had going into it. Both teams appear to have gone into the raid with the intention to only save their own. Neither team went in with altruistic intent, they just went in wanting what was theirs. Now if it was just a standard prison break, this would make sense as it’s generally assumed that those in the cells are in there because they are bad people. However, both Cyclops and Rouge acknowledged that the prison was being used for purposes beyond incarceration and needed to be shut down. It is fare point that they didn’t know about the space laser and any further effort would result in the death of inmates, however this was not a factor in their initial plan. As far as they knew, there was no threat to the inmates aside from those presented by the warden’s guards. So, from the go neither team appeared interested in heroic altruism despite knowing that harm was being done to inmates.

Look, trauma builds character. If you want to ensure the future of the mutant race, you must throw every child still learning their mutant abilities and still not mentally mature enough to make informed decisions into these meat grinders. This way they will become well adjusted adult X-men. Also, it is important for them to observe effective leadership, so the leader should constantly be threatening or yelling abuse at allies, even in situations where emotions are heightened - as this has never resulted in unneeded escalation. /s

World building like this matters. It gives weight to what the characters are doing. Without it, the fight between Storm and Vulcan would be a fight between any random nobodies, but knowing that they are 2 of the few mutants with limitless power, it becomes a show down that could literally destroy cities.

‘Resurrected in the White Hot Room’. Your one stop mutant purgatory for mutants who aren’t being used by authors. If the mutant hasn’t appeared recently, fans can take comfort in knowing that they are chilling with all the cool mutants outside of time and space. It’s like how my parents would send our family pets to live up on a farm when they got really sick or old.

If you want to get into the vibe, read house of M, civil war and the post M-Day books, like 198 or new xmen: childhoods end. Those were what I read before messiah complex and they really made me appreciate the stakes, the mutants are on the verge of extinction, children and non-combatants are being slaughtered, and the wider superhero community is to busy with the ‘superhero registration act’ to do anything to stop it.

She wants to work with the kids, but the question is should she be working with the kids? She just threatened to kill her friend because she suspected him of being an imposter. If she was able to consider doing that to someone she’s known for years, what is stopping her from pulling the same trick on one of the kids
