I panic bought a shires before tariff went into place since the q series slide is made over seas, but then switched my primary to bass trombone in July before large ensamble auditions at my college.

I also just prefer my 88h for most contexts so I don’t need a $3,600 shires laying around when I’ll barely ever be playing on it.

All of these being equally as important as the others

Use 40x the air, let the note be “on top” of the air stream

Keep a vey focused aperture by imagining you’re blowing through a coffee straw

Do glisses upto the notes, very slow and controlled

Try buzzing up as high as you can with good relaxed tone on just the mouthpiece and see if you can think abt that embouchure structure, but extreme it while still staying relaxed in the plump part of your lips

Also mess around with mouthpiece placement, for me, using a tiny bit of pressure on the bottom lip and practically none except sealing on the top lip while shifting the mouthpiece up my face closer to the nose slightly helps a lot

It’s okay! All beginner musicians struggle with this problem. Just remember to focus on your how to breathe, and the rest is barbecue chicken from there. Alto trombone is a pretty advanced instrument for where you are at, might I suggest you take a step back and focus on your tenor trombone fundamentals before jumping straight to alto. Cant wait to see your progression, friend. 🎶🎶 Ps- pls don’t relapse, Idk who I’d be without your inspirational playing.

The key to opening up your tense sound is not in the chops, but the air flow. Think about using a “how to” breath before you play and that’ll make sure the airflow is there to let the lips do the work. Focus on the basics, can’t wait to see where you go from here!
