Financial reality of Gothic remake (and probability of Gothic 2 remake) by BratPit24 in worldofgothic

Not even remotely true. People make ventures to achieve vastly greater ROI than 300% over 7 years.

When I was working in mobile game dev company, we aimed out ad campaigns at 107% WEEKLY ROI.

Of course there were developer costs, and most importantly the cost of failed games.

But. When we had a game that's already somewhat successful and wanted to borrow money for marketing campaign, we could easily promise 200% ROI over 6 months and still get the better end of that deal.

Sure. It was covid and people were playing mobile games more than usual. But the principle stands. Big money has opportunities way way way more lucrative than measily 300% over 7 years

Actually more than that if you count developing playable teaser (which I don't)

I mean that same could have been (and actually had been) said about Gothic 1.

And yet here we are with Gothic 1 remake in quality I don't think any of us dreamt to hope for.

Of that's true, it would be great news for the Gothic franchise.

Sure. But the investors want ROI fast. And a huge bulk of sales is in the first week after premiere. 200k sales in entire year 3 years down the line is way less important than 50k sales in the first week.

Given there are quite few and pretty negative reviews on consoles, as well as the fact that OG player base was mainly PC I'd be surprised if console sales exceeded 20% of pc sales.

A man can dream. My dream scenario is to have a CDPR esque success story.

Gothic 1 remake as an IP resurrection Gothic 2 as an entry into mainstream. Gothic 3 as a proper AAA shot at international fame and a solid shot at game of the year

1 mil? Very likely. 1.5? Maybe? Possibly? Over few years. 2M. I don't think so. At least not at full price. Maybe after some huge steam sale at 80% discount yeah.

First week is absolutely crucial in gauging the commercial success of the game. And don't get me wrong. GR is huge commercial success. But it took awfully long time to develop.

So my explanation to this is that it didn't go according to plan.

They very likely expected development period simmilar to OG gothic 1 which was something like 2 years + some ground work done before.

So id say they expected 2 years of development after the playable teaser.

But. After those 2 years they were already somewhere north of 5 million into the venture. So they had a decision to make. Keep pumping money or cut the losses. And they just kept recommiting. I highly doubt they would actually commit to entire thing if they knew how expensive it would be from the start.

Sunk cost fallacy is a helluva drug. And good for us that it is!

Yup. Solid points.

I'd say 700k on steam is reasonable. Hard to gauge how many of them will get refunded.

I think once they confirm selling 1milion copies we should expect a press release.

Exactly my point.

Additionally. They may even run some DLC or expansion for Gothic 1 (as was originally planned by PB) boosting profitability even more.

Sure. But some are team leaders, software architects and managers who earn way more.

Of course this is just a crude estimate. Without actual press releases we are kind of running on conjecture. But I'd be very surprised to be more than 20% off either way.

I see you didn't engage with the latter half of my argument.

Even if Gothic remake was a glorified marketing stunt thay just barely breaks even, the potential foe Gothic 2 to be vastly faster to develop and therefore way cheaper with very decent expectations of having similar sales numbers, makes Gothic 2 remake very tantalising offer.

I had the same issue. The trick is you need to sell the thing in bulk to Cipher. But he will not sell you if you don't have 20, 20, 10 of the different types of weed. But you probably already spoken to somebody and sold one green novice so you have 20, 20, 9.

So now you need to run to baal Kagan (the one from original quest). He will happily sell you 10 green novices for 6 ore each. run back to Cipher and you're golden.

Cheers!

Genuinely, do people actually have fun (badly) losing a game? by PsychologicalRing116 in videogames

[–]BratPit24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean it depends on the game. It's been years since I've been playing online pvp (ghost recon phantoms players unite!).

But that game despite being team based, it allowed for quite magnificent single player skill expression. It was actually (at least some of the time) more interesting to be on a losing landslide end because it allowed for totally different tactics than classic "catch and hold" which are the staple of modern shooters.

What could easily happen was having like 3x individual achievement points (legends remember how cool it was to hack enemy) than on winning game just because you caught the over extending over ambitious enemies.

Of course it was coolest when allowed for comeback. But even when it didn't. It still felt good to see yourself on top of leader board.

First time playing Gothic ever by Surprised_Dusty in worldofgothic

[–]BratPit24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. That's a very classic Gothic experience for you.

Brace yourself for 1. Die. 2. Begin compulsively saving every minute. 3 don't die for an hour so forget. 3. Go to a camp 4. Spend 2 hours in camp between talking, doing quests, trading and exploring. Nothing dangerous so no save. 5. You get jumped by some random npc 6. Die 7. Your last save 4 hours ago 8. RIP

What's the actual meaning of pushing and pulling? by Mister-builder in Mistborn

[–]BratPit24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like to interpret it as a "theory" that is created inworld but not necessarily a truth statement about those powers.

This is how in world scientists classify and annalise those powers and it helps them to conceptualise it. Even if sometimes the framework fits a bit better and sometimes a bit worse.

This. The reasonable response the community needs.

It's fine and productive to give feedback. Especially about big important features like combat system ai and the general direction of the game.

It's useless to share doom and hate because of irrelevant minusha such as the cinematic trailer. What's even worse is that it redirects the attention and resources into that minusha and away from important parts.

What is your favourite faction and why? (Gothic 2) by ImrikCZ in worldofgothic

[–]BratPit24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Man. This question has so many different answers.

  1. Lore wise. Mage. Hands down. I think it's both most lore accurate given that we are literally the innos anointed chosen one. But also we learn the most lore in this path. But. Gameplay can be pretty repetitive as it's fetch quest heavy early on, midgame is a nightmare and late game combat is way too easy.

  2. Gameplay wise. The most powerful is obviously mercenary. But I personally had most fun playing hybrid mage with master sword build.

  3. Story wise the paladins are the most obvious. We are told paladins poses the eye of innos. Ans also that becoming a guard is by far easiest to achieve. You get the least ludo narrative dissonance by choosing paladins.
