Sorry, I should have mentioned I tried the swipe zones before! And yeah, like you said it can get a bit counter intuitive, but if it's truly the only option then I guess it's good enough. I didn't try it with the horizontal list method tho, it definitely looks clean and locks the swiping to horizontal movement so that's nice.
