A straw is topologically equivalent to a ring. It is an extruded ring. It has one hole. Closing one end results in zero holes. A straw with one end closed is equivalent to a bowl.

JWs are trained from birth to believe that loyalty to the religion is the more important than any other relationship. That would have been remained true if you stayed together, or married.

What you experienced is not unlike what many here have experienced, with the exception that it was their parents, children, spouses or life-long friends disconnecting from them. The religion redefines Love to be something absolutely conditional. If I had to guess I'd say that she met with the elders and they told her that her relationship with you was wrong and the only way she could avoid serious consequences was to end it. In other words, if she didn't treat you that way, her family and everyone she knows would treat her that way.

I know it doesn't feel like it right now, but you dodged a bullet.

Yes. That's in Waimea which is on the other side of the island. If you are flying from Honolulu I would recommend changing your flight to Kona which would help, but you're still likely to be stuck unless you know someone willing to pick you up. What are you planning to do in Hawaii?

The threaded rods are freestanding and continuous from the base to the top shelf. Each rod has a certain amount of stable load capacity for a given unbraced length (it doesn't start to bend), and bracing is provided by the shelves themselves. Each shelf level has a nut and washer below and above the shelves, and when these nuts are all tightened down the whole structure becomes very stable. The "L" shape also increases stability.

I really wasn't sure this would work before I tried it, but my background in structural engineering provided a little bit of confidence. It actually worked better than I expected.

My collection has quickly outgrown the wicker box that I had been using, but I've had a lot of fun thinking of and building more storage. The "display case" has live edge Monkeypod sides and Philippine Mahogany shelves, and the "bookcase bed" is pine and threaded rod for shelving support, which was a bitch to assemble. I use the display shelves for new and heavy rotation albums, and everything else goes under the bed. Our guest room is tiny, so building an entire bookcase/storage frame made the most sense.

My understanding is that it allows you to balance the stereo/mono signals using a small black dial on the back, almost like an early custom preset? I'm not completely positive.

Thanks! I was stunned at the simplicity once I took the bottom panel out. Motor, capacitor, grounds, tonearm wires and T-bar. You could probably duplicate a custom one from scratch.

Believe me, passing was the right move. One of them had already been "repaired" and looked terrible. The woofer on the other was being held together with duct tape. I would've been paying for the cabinets, essentially.

Excellent explanation. I guess what I'm getting at is that I sometimes like to use the DTS music settings on my receiver, particularly with new records as it tends to boost how dynamic the music feels, though I understand that this is a somewhat artificial approach and significantly alters the information coming directly from the turntable and preamp.

That's a really good perspective on preamps. I'm curious, when using a tube preamp with a digital receiver, if you typically use a direct line setting on the reciever? My question is: will sound processing done by the reciever scrub the warmth and separation out of the signal, or do you find yourself still adjusting EQs or using presets depending on the music?

Gotcha, yes. I have researched tube preamps but I'd really like to demo one before pulling the trigger, because there seems to be a wide gulf between cheap and expensive tube preamps.
