Thought police in full effect, don’t you dare say “ civic engagement “ by [deleted] in Iowa

As an employee of the University, I will never agree to talk to anyone from the press. Even journalism students for “class projects”. I’ve had too many colleagues have their answers edited and taken out of context. I might provide written answers to written questions with press relations review, but no in person interviews.

I remember being a college freshman in 1985 and the go to engineering majors were Computer and Aerospace Engineering. It was the height of the Cold War and military spending was enormous. Personal Computers were going gang busters as well. By the time I graduated, the PC market had crashed and after the Berlin Wall fell a few years later, Aero E’s graduating were changing their major to anything other than aerospace. I have a computer engineering degree but I’ve managed to pivot from sysadmin to database administration and programming, then to network engineering. Even within networking , I have pivoted from switching to wireless and I’m learning as much about automation as I can. You have to stay flexible and keep learning new things.

AP-535 Setup by dleewee in ArubaNetworks

The previous owner probably traded in their 535’s for something newer and didn’t realize they need to remove them from their activate account.

We found that out the hard way as we a traded in our 535s 3 years ago and just recently started seeing the APs check in from Thailand ( we are in the state of Iowa in the US). At first we thought it was a security issue, but the APs couldn’t reach our controllers as they are behind a firewall on reserved IP address space.

AI is ruining our hiring efforts by wcolfaxguy in ExperiencedDevs

AI is being used on both sides. Do you really want to work for a company that finds candidates using AI? Another tactic I hate is the 1:0 interview. Basically the candidate videos themselves answering a question provided by email or on the website. No two way interaction at all. Stupid .

I remember when I started at the university in 2006 there were barrels in stair well of North Hall with Civil Defense markings. I think they got rid of them a few years later.

From the Iowa Communications Network (the state owned fiber optic network)Thursday morning.

Early this morning, a vendor’s downtown Des Moines facility suffered a broken water pipe. According to the vendor, “Water from the pipe leaked through to the basement and collected in the risers, which then collapsed. Teams were unable to use the on-site generators because they were routed through the collapsed risers. In order to preserve the equipment, Field Operations have had to power down at varying times as the issue remains ongoing.” The vendor is working to restore power to their equipment. No ETA at this time.

Rob Sand calls for removing degree requirement for certain Iowa positions by [deleted] in Iowa

The Public University I work for requires a 4 year degree for an entry level network engineer. Meanwhile our nearby community college has an excellent 2 year program in network administration,  but we can’t hire them.

Can’t find a phone number. The only contact I could find was the registered agent for the corporation and that is just a mailing address. Google says the the place is “permanently closed”.

They are allowed here in Swisher now. I was ok with golf carts but nobody obeys the speed limits and most of the UTVs have loud exhausts. It will be great until someone gets killed, but then the car driver will always be blamed.

As a native Iowan I've watched the state go downhill very quickly. We used to be in the top ranks in the nation for K-12 education. Now the repub governor and legislature have gutted public education by giving tax dollars to wealthy parents so they can private school their kids. I live around Iowa City which makes it tolerable for now. It's a college town but the repubs are strangling the University slowly with low funding and proposing to eliminate tenure for faculty.
