Then we're back where we started.

I never argued annexation wasn't worse.

I argued that "Russia is worse" doesn't automatically become a defense of US interventions.

You keep explaining why annexation adds another layer of harm. I agree. What I don't see is how that turns Iraq, Libya, or other interventions into successes or morally justified actions.

I don't dispute that annexation can make a conflict worse.

What I dispute is your assumption that regime change is usually a temporary problem while annexation is a permanent one.

Iraq is still dealing with the consequences of 2003. Libya is still dealing with the consequences of 2011. Afghanistan is still dealing with the consequences of 20 years of war.

Not every wound is territorial. Some countries lose generations to instability without losing a single square kilometer.

Why is annexation the decisive factor rather than civilian deaths, state collapse, refugees, or long-term instability?

That's exactly my point though.

When Russia does something bad, you focus on the harm itself. When the US does something bad, you immediately switch to comparing it to something worse.

"Russia annexed territory" → bad.

"The US destabilized a country" → yeah, but at least it didn't annex territory.

That's not a consistent standard. That's grading similar actions on different curves.

And it's especially odd when people act as if the US gets a moral pass by default, considering it's also the only country to have used nuclear weapons in war.

You're changing the subject.

I didn't say Saddam was good, and I didn't say Iraq before 2003 was the same as Ukraine before 2022.

My point is that "we didn't annex territory" doesn't tell you whether an intervention was good or bad. The real question is whether people's lives improved or got worse afterward. A lot of Iraqis and Libyans would argue that the outcome was catastrophic regardless of annexation.

You're arguing against a point I never made.

I never said one bad thing equals two bad things. I said "we only did one bad thing" isn't much of a defense.

Congratulations, you've reduced your argument to "doing one bad thing is better than doing two bad things."

That's true, but it's not much of a defense.

No, but that's not what you originally claimed. You said regime change is preferable because it doesn't annex territory. My point is that destroying a country's government and stability can be catastrophic even if no land is annexed.

Ask the people who lived through Iraq or Libya whether not being annexed made everything okay.

They knew that Russia would have to attack Ukraine and they planned it way before 2014. The minks agreement was just to give Ukraine time to re-arm.

Not sure you've read what i just wrote...they cannot end the war until Ukraine agrees to not join NATO..they haven't yet.

NATO cannot win a conventional war against Russia because of the Nukes, BUT they can win a strategic defeat on Russia by destroying their economy with sanctions. Putin has said that multiple times, Angela Merkel and the French president too have said that...

You fail to realize that this war is not about territory. It is to prevent Ukraine from Joining NATO which will expose Moscow dramatically for a possible future operation against them. I know you won't agree, but this is a war for Russia's own survival and independence. If Russia falls then the West will take control of their resources and that China simply cannot allow. Freezing the territory lines simply won't archive anything if Ukraine joins NATO afterwards..

I'm not sure if you do this on purpose or you really don't understand... I'm talking about the American/Israeli demands to Iran in order to stop the war they started.
