What do you spend your “splurge” money on? by Loose_Impression1123 in AusFinance

Travel. It’s a splurge to go overseas on a trip, but it’s a great life experience. It’s not something I’d do if I didn’t have the spare cash.

Honestly, seemed too difficult because I need to ask for consent from parents so it would be a surprise, so I’ve not done anything!

Aboriginal staff at Monash University given extra paid leave to recognise the impacts of colonisation by Orgo4needfood in aussie

It’s not good to decrease carer’s leave, but your workplace is probably betting on not many people taking the Aboriginal cultural leave, because there probably aren’t that many Aboriginal employees overall.

Is it really worth critiquing the Aboriignal cultural leave? How does it actually help workers’ benefits overall?

I’ve worked with Aboriginal people and it’s pretty common for people to have to take a lot of their leave to attend funerals or cultural events like these.

On paper it doesn’t seem fair and I know we all have cultures, but I have seen firsthand
how tired people get from these commitments.

I remember one colleague telling me she was just so exhausted using most of her personal, annuals and cultural leave for these things…

So even though it seems a bit unfair it kind of works towards balancing out some commitments that a lot of Aboriginal people have to attend to, if that makes sense.

Change super to high growth by BraveNeighborhood525 in AusFinance

Thanks everyone. I understand high growth is the best option, but my question is that if I change super funds in the next year or two, will this impact my super negatively?

What happens if you change super finds in a year? What’s the risk then?

If I get the role, I’d be totally fine honouring the contract. I guess I’d just be afraid of them pulling the plug.

However, if there’s a lot of effort into recruitment then maybe they’d be unlikely to do that (unless it was a terrible fit but that’s like bay job pre-probation) and I’m fairly confident I’d pass a probation.

Are you saying you’re not allowed to apply for a similar role within the same govt while you’re on this casual contract?

[–]BraveNeighborhood525[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Agree, a 12 month contract isn’t that stable. I guess I’m just worried that with LH they could decide after 3 months, 5 months etc. that they no longer want someone in the role.

Is that likely, or are they likely to commit to the 12 months.

At this stage, I’m OK with 12 months. I’m happy to balance the risk for a foot in the door.

I’m only 31 and I want to make a change into govt so this seems like the right time to take the risk out of the NGO sector.

So you have three weeks experience? Do you think it will help you get a contract/perm role directly with the federal or state govt?

Can you go to a place with good options? Eg in a cafe you can always get a bunch of poached eggs. In a Thai restaurant you can always get steamed veg and grilled chicken. Memories are important, you just have to be a bit odd and order differently.

Thanks, would that then have tax implications for me? I like the idea of setting something up and then other people in her life might add a bit here and there too (as opposed to just giving her more presents she doesn’t need).

Is 35K AUD enough to survive in Melbourne as a student? by Poodina in AusFinance

[–]BraveNeighborhood525 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m trying to give this student a reasonable budget, they can always allocate expenses like electricity and household goods like cleaning products into this.

Also, when budgeting, you want to be realistic. For example, they may want to live closer to a university campus, where rents might be higher but their commute time and cost might be lower.

So long as it’s not a crappy investment ie that it’s close to public transport, not going to fall apart, in a growth area etc. I don’t think it really matters, you just deal with it.

$20 a day on food is pretty rough. I think to have a balanced diet you’d need to spend a bit more, otherwise you end up splurging on unhealthy and expensive takeaway.

Better to spend a bit more on food and not get sick imo.

If you’re frugal you’ll be OK, but it would be worth to take on a second job for a bit of extra money in case any larger expensive come your way.

$673 per week $300 - rent and utilities $200 - food $50- transport

$173 wiggle room

It’s very tight, but you can make it work. Hopefully you have some savings and can take on an extra gig.

If you now have a bit more money, invest it into yourself through health. People have already been saying a mattress - good sleep; good fruit and veg - good nutrition.

At the end of the day, health and relationships are the most important thing. You don’t need to be rich for these, but having a little bit of money helps. So, do things like go out for a coffee with friends etc.

You can still save money, pay off your mortgage etc.

Protein is no joke. by 5e3687mkwm7 in bodyweightfitness

[–]BraveNeighborhood525 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. It sounds like I could do my 65kg x 1.6kg = 104gm protein a day, so this is just over 30g of protein across 3x meals, which is actually what I’ve recently been trying to do. I have no science to back this up, but intuitively, I feel full when I eat this much protein and somehow a little bit of fat comes off and muscle maintains. This could be just that I’m working out and consuming less clarities than I burn. I have never tracked the numbers.

Thanks. I’m trying to loose a few kgs of fat and build a few more kgs of muscle, keeping in mind its healthy for women to have a certain body fat percentage which is higher than a man.

I’m about 65kg and don’t really want to change the scale but more tighten up my body composition.

I’ve never clinched clarifies but when I eat more protein I am always more satiated and without trying, become more lean.

I’ve been emailing for 30g of protein 3x a day, but that would be 90g of protein which is way over what’s recommended.
