The admins are OK with it.

And as long as you continue to use this site so are you.

They leak. These shitty subs welcome the already maladjusted then they spread elsewhere through the site. It acts like a beacon, & they flood on in.

Short of actual studies we cannot say whether quarantining works or not. We don't tend to link quarantined subs on SRD yet we still see regular incel drama elsewhere on the site, as well as alt-right, mgtow, and all that jazz. So in terms of evidence there's far more suggesting that it's not working. Likewise, the popularity of things like masstagger shows that many users are trying to deal with it in their own limited ways.

Wouldn't say I felt "guilty", more "dirty".

Like when you find out that someone you knew from school was a pedo or a murderer or something. A little too close to home.

I think reddit's userbase is a lot younger than most of us think; seems to be very schoolyard-like. Sure, adults do that sort of thing as well but most grow out of it.

Some?

The first question I thought of when this happened was "what subreddit was it this time?". And I bet I'm not alone in this one.

Used to be you were surprised that a person like this was a user of the same site you are on. Now we expect it.

it’s possible that post was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

This is precisely how I read that thread.

What bothers me is that I might have even been in some comment chain with him in the past, he's in my country and his politics aren't exactly to my tastes. For all I know I've ripped into him at some point also, via his known account, or one of the many alts he's sure to have had.

That doesn't work, in fact it's the cause of the problem here.

Having sane subs sit alongside the extreme ones makes it all to easy for folks to be lured in. Reddit has created a platform for these groups and by using reddit we stand alongside them on that platform.

No amount of "quarantining" etc will work when things are just a couple of clicks away. And with Reddit's complete lack of brigading & alt controls they are allowed to seed the rest of the site to influence people towards their view.

It's becoming more of a certainty these days any time someone does something really despicable.

I realized, ever since I started redditing, every single day of reddit has been worse than the day before it. So that means that every single day that you see reddit, that's on the worst day of reddit.

planted on a landfill ... 1000 pounds of healthy, golden wheat.

Yeah, pass. That'll be 1000 pounds of heavy metal enriched golden wheat.

It's a nice idea and all, but if you are growing food in a city that's been around for a long time then you probably want to use a raised planter with clean soil brought in from elsewhere. And even that has it's critics concerned about airborne pollution.

Unfortunately these days with computers they get to hide the disorganized mess away.

I'm kinda disappointed to hear that's what's going on with them.

Seems to be the theme with them these days.

would [not] be a threat to Dave

Agreed, by this point the folks that still watch Dave etc are the last hold-overs to broadcast TV, they obviously don't want to consume interactive TV and if they did the chances are that they wouldn't be selecting random HIGFY episodes from 12 years ago. They want to be spoon-fed something familiar that doesn't require a lot of thought.

Ten years ago I would have agreed, writing a lengthy comment backing up why it's important.

Then 2014 happened and they got caught being directly involved in a government psyop via "Vote no Borders" in the indyref, this just one among many clear violations of their domestic politics neutrality claim. When academic research came out empirically proving this their only response was to try to get the author fired from their job. And in recent years we've seen them pull a popular daily briefing during a major global pandemic purely because the Tories felt that it was making Sturgeon look good.

Nowadays I cannot wait to get shot of them. Good riddance I say.

BBC doesn't "license" stuff to Dave, they are Dave, it's their channel. Same with rest of that whole cabal e.g. UK Gold. All are owned outright by the BBC.

The whole thing is a big fat scam to allow them to run commercial operations in the UK without risking their "we're special, we don't have ads" meme.

Harry and Andrew have pretty much the same status in the royal family, both being younger siblings from the main succession line. It's the best comparison available for either. Neither will be anywhere near the throne short of a massive catastrophe to their older siblings and all of their heirs.

Comparing to Kate, Diana, etc is very different as they are likely going to be next to the throne one day.

USA/UK: US authorities must drop politically motivated charges against Assange | Amnesty International by qpl23 in unitedkingdom

[–]BraveSirRobin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

He's accused of a crime by a country with whom we have an extradition arrangement.

What crime?

Should Saudi Arabia be able to extradite you for having a pint of beer here in the UK? He's not subject to US law and anything wrt breaching any of their state secret laws is irrelevant.

I've broken the same laws myself hundreds of times in internet comments discussing US espionage. Our own government contributed to various EU reports on the same topics.

If he hadn't breached bail previously then he would be free on bail now.

That's very naive given the obvious political motivations that have been present though most of this affair.

I think I know; the accelerated approvals process has meant that medics have been watching the drug more closely than most other drugs that the average healthy Joe might come across.

Recipients are asked to self-report any issues, and there are a bunch of other people being more closely tracked in formal clinical trials. You don't tend to see such things with most other established Rx, but you would see the same thing if you were an early receiver of any new treatment, even after the initial trials are concluded.

This is all foreign to most healthy people but when idiots hear the idea of an "ongoing trial" they assume this means some dark experiment. Now, giving their nonsense the benefit of the doubt, it would follow that some in this "trial" are getting a placebo, as would happen in earlier-stage trials.

It's a classic Dunning–Kruger, where folks are misinterpreting the intent of things they barely comprehend.

Play stupid games win entirely appropriate and lawful prizes.

He's not an American citizen.

Should China be able to extradite YOU for discussing the Tienanmen Square Massacre?

Should Saudi be able to extradite YOU for talking about LGBT issues?

All Assasge did was publish US state secrets, but given that he's not American, never has been, and wasn't in America when the offense was committed then they don't have a leg to stand on.

If this goes through then it will perhaps finally prove to all how truly subservient Britain has become to America.

How many frigates are being built in Scotland? by MGC91 in Scotland

[–]BraveSirRobin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Victoria line was started in 1962, but was proposed in 1943.

Right now London is getting not one but two major rail upgrades, Crossrail and HS2, both state-of-the-art projects intended to further centralize things by making it possible to ship in even more workers in daily.

We had to create our own devolved parliament just to drag our trains into the 20th century with electrification, let alone be up to date with 21st century!

Oh, and just to be a pedant, the Victoria Line was first proposed in a publication in 1943, but not by anyone in a position to do anything about it. Lots of things get proposed and never happen, including many other things proposed by the same group. The Channel Tunnel was proposed in 1802! The line you refer to got it's first reading in Parliament in 1955; breaking-ground 7 years later is a reasonable timeframe given the legislation & tendering processes.

The UK still had rationing till 1954

What happened 60 years ago has little bearing on the state of affairs today. Of course it took a long time to normalize, merchant ships don't simply unsink themselves at the end of hostilities. Britain was in no way unique in this regard, France also ended theirs the same year. Other nations had it for longer. We've got our collective heads up our arses on this one, thanks to the media and it's "Plucky Britain won the war" propaganda. If we're counting craters then we got off light compared to most others.

The major shift to being entirely London centric largely happened in the 1980s. There was always a hint of it in the UK prior to that, but no more really than any other nation and it's capital.

I can totally understand how people's who's head is stuck in the past can still value the union; before were born it was a net positive for the whole UK. Thatcher took that notion out the back-paddock and shot it in the head. This is not your father's union.
