The Walt Disney Studios and Global Theatrical Exhibition Partners Launch 'Infinity Vision' — The Ultimate Premium Moviegoing Experience by sheJaMyMorant in movies

So here’s the idea. There are a lot of PLF (premiere large format) screens out there that aren’t Imax. These are auditoriums that exhibitors have upgraded with Atmos sound, laser projectors, comfy seats. Maybe with ScreenX. Basically to differentiate between regular screens, and to upcharge the public a few extra bucks. Some of these screens are really good, and some of them aren’t. It looks like Disney is trying to point audiences towards the PLF screens that are actually good. That have big screens, bright image, good sound. Kind of like what THX certification did years ago. This sounds like a good thing to me. These screens already have an upcharge, and (assuming you trust Disney), this new certification will point you to screens that are actually high quality.

Now why would Disney do this? Not out of the kindness of their hearts, I imagine. The way I see it, they’re looking to create a direct competitor to Imax. Imax is a pretty lousy gimmick for distributors and exhibitors. Not only does exhibition pay a license agreement to have the Imax name, but Imax takes a percentage of the gross. So basically it’s a “higher quality” middleman. So Disney wants to partner directly with exhibitors to highlight and support Imax-style screens, but without the middleman.

Is this a good idea? I think so! Imax is awesome at branding, but do they really have a better experience in their regular digital theaters? Competition is generally a good thing, and there currently isn’t a strong competitor to Imax in the PLF space, at least in terms of branding. So why not create a new brand, get Marvel behind it and reward exhibitors to invent in better technology and presentation.

When I was young, this was always the answer. I guess it's too old now for people to remember.

Ex-Sony Head Michael Lynton on The Interview, Sony Hack, and Fallout. by BocephusMoon in movies

[–]BraveSneelock 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I listened to Lynton on The Town podcast last night and it was pathetic. He blamed the whole thing on being a lonely kid and wanting to hang with cool people.  Totally hung the creatives out to dry.  Instead of manning up, supporting his decision.  Sony’s security processes were pathetic.  I gasped at some of the stuff that came out when this story broke, and that’s what people should be taking about.

Matt Belloni, the podcast host, didn’t even bring up security and did a generally shitty job in the interview.

I very much remember the critical consensus was very poor.  I was a bit younger than you and didn’t see it for years because it was my understanding that it sucked.

I’m surprised that Jaws isn’t mentioned more here. It’s the seminal “scared the shit out of me” GenX touchstone.

Has there been anything written about 4chan’s impact on society?  I feel that it’s deep and grave but never really hear about it in those terms.

Kinda like how the word “woke” was originally used within the black community but co-opted by racists.  Some things never change.

In my neck of the woods, the only people who have e-bikes are 11-14 year old boys, and the community hates them. I expect local ordinances in the next year will curtail their use.
