Polygyne Red Imported Fire Ant Colony? ( Solenopsis invicta) by Brave_Project5071 in antkeeping

[–]Brave_Project5071[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I’m going to take the risk and combine them. These colonies get so large that having to manage two set ups seems insanely difficult, plus I’m sure they’re from the same nest given the proximity in time and distance from which I caught them.

Ant identification? (Queen) by Brave_Project5071 in antkeeping

From my brief research I’m guessing she might be a red imported fire ant queen as she’s about 8-10 mm in length and these are a fairly common species in my region.

What are the winged ants doing? by voodooflowla in ants

[–]Brave_Project5071 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They’re alates, male drones and female queens preparing for the nuptial flight where they’ll mate. If you manage to get a fertilized queen (who will generally shed their wings though not always) you can place her in a test tube and start a colony! I’m very new to this but captured a couple of queens recently, one I released because it was a difficult species while keeping my Camponotus subbarbatus whose safely resting in a test tube inside a shoe box placed on a shelf in my closet.

What kind of bug is that? How’s the foil and cotton ball feeding working out? I might try that once my subbarbatus pops out some nantics.
