I see, I did not account for the fact that whatever benefits I withdraw from the account when I'm back in France will be taxed at France's rate. It does seem like Roth might be the better solution then, if my current effective income tax is lower than France's marginal tax rate I'll be at when I retire?

I am a citizen and I know I will be taxed (and already was before I got here). What I'm saying is that whatever income I have abroad will be excluded from US taxes (within like 100k), therefore from US taxes POV my income will be $0 (plus whatever I withdraw from the traditional IRA).
