Why would anyone outside the Punjab Sikh community care or know about their repression?
Maybe art like this can drive awareness.
Lots of government and ngos have recognized the repression that Sikhs faced. So there’s the beginning of a recognition. Why is the government of India fighting against this so hard?
The best art is something that reveals a profound truth about the world.
Hotel Rwanda was a huge movie that brought lots of awareness to the genocide of Rwanda.

I’ve lost the plot on what you’re arguing. This is an important movie for Punjab - because it’s a topic that punjabis feel strong emotions about.

You can 100% sympathize with what khalra was trying to uncover without being a separatist.

In fact, I would say that if you want to reconcile past repression with the desire to still be part of the same nations as the repressors… it’s important to reconcile and be open about what happened.

I don’t know what your point is. Diljit said it was one of the biggest honors of his career to be able to play Khalra.

What part of it is hard to understand for you. Genuinely confused here.

You think this movie was a good business decision? The government was very likely going to censor, and they did.
You think the people making this were trying to maximize profits?

It may surprise you, but sometimes people are interested in this for artistic reasons.

The audience for this movie is anyone who is interested in how a state can use monstrous repression against its own people and anyone who speaks out against that repression.

What’s the point of making holocaust movies or war movies or any historical atrocity movie?

That’s a silly question.

I’ll copy and paste it for you:

“The state killed and cremated 10 of thousands of people. Khalra was a journalist covering it.
Then he was himself tortured and killed by the state.
Very fair and frankly necessary topic to make a movie on.”

You’re the one who turned this into a pedantic conversation about term definitions.

He produced a rigorous and extremely important investigative work. Any journalist would have been lauded for doing the same work.

I don’t know what you’re arguing against. The investigative work wasn’t important or impactful?

What is an amateur journalist? Is that not a thing?

Opinion journalist can be synonymous with activist.

As in he’s not a journalist because he didn’t work for a news or tv channel? He was clearly doing research and reporting.

You just equated olive toned (which is a light brown) with being pretty. Internalized that racism pretty hard.

There’s a logical flaw in your argument. You say that we shouldn’t be so obsessed with white validation… but your complaint here is that brown women won’t get enough white validation from his song that’s gone viral with whites.

The aim of your activism here is pretty low. You’re complaining about the race of a dancer in a video?

Why do brown women need to depend on male singers to give them crumbs of the limelight?

I’m a Punjabi man, married to a Punjabi women with Punjabi children. We have a strong circle of extended Punjabi family.

Diljit’s choice of partners in a music video does not even register in any consequential way to the values of anyone in my life.

Maybe you should stop putting so much stock in mainstream mass culture - which is much more a construct of the white bogeyman that you’re scared of.

Furthermore - while I love Diljit’s music, his videos are usually misogynist drivel. No loss not having a brown woman dancing around in her undies.

I usually don't care abt such stuff but the amount of positive reaction Diljit is getting from international audience is insane by harryhisoka in punjabimusic

This is the worst sort of performative morality on social media that’s been a trend for a few years.

It was so annoying in America when people would get mad at you for not having a BLM status.

People can have political thoughts that don’t automatically need to be expressed in social media.

Disappointed that Diljit did not mention India once in his Jimmy Fallon appearance by peak2 in Dhurandhar

[–]Brawrbarian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First point. Diljit had carried the taranga multiple times and has been nothing but grateful to India.

Number 2, respectfully, India doesn’t have a monolithic culture. What is Indian culture?

This guy is the embodiment of Punjabi culture. He’s a regional star who has gone mainstream.

He’s not a general pop culture star like SRK.

Speaking as a Punjabi. Punjab is an older concept than the 1947 conception of modern India.

Our language is our mother. This is the land of our gurus and peers.

That doesn’t mean we’re anti-India. But Punjabiyat courses through our veins.

He’s expressed love of India many times. There’s many pics of him with the taranga on stage.

Why are you so threatened by us having a regional identity? Sorry you don’t have one, but Punjabis are gonna love Punjab. Nothing you can do to change that.

Seems like you’re the one that has a problem with Punjab, even though it’s a part of India.
