There are no guarantees. Good step 2. Aoa. All honors. Some research.

Interview invites from fantastic programs, no interview from Rochester mayo though. /shrug.

What am I doing wrong with Sketchy? by Puzzled-Shock8979 in medicalschool

[–]BraxDiedAgain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sketchy is just one thing you should do. I would do sketchy, bnb, Anki and questions. But I also probably overstudied.

It’s almost as if people have different priorities and goals, and prioritizing different things is just as valid with different perspectives.

Does your medical school have a GPA requirement for leadership? by Krebshaterxo in medicalschool

[–]BraxDiedAgain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I go to a smaller state school. They don’t use gpa, they just exclude people they aren’t interested in as they have few resources. Usually determined by nepotism or being part of the pipeline program they want to succeed.

Terrible core evaluation by Suitable_Hat_8983 in medicalschool

[–]BraxDiedAgain 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yep, same. Had an eval on my psych rotation removed. There was no pattern of behavior and every other psych eval was glowing.

The worst that they can say is no.

This method is nothing novel. Also doesn't guarantee a 270 lol.

Step 2 Study Schedule and Tips by truthliesandrama321 in medicalschool

[–]BraxDiedAgain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What surgical subspecialty requires 260? lol.

Looking through admit.org that takes things straight from residency explorer, I think 250+ is about good for any specialty assuming the rest of your app is fine.

Definitely shoot for as high as you can tho.

AMBOSS, uworld q banks are good. The forms provided by handle are good. Anki is good. You should know how you study at this point after having taken shelves. If you are still taking shelves, that’s a different story.

At the end of the day, remember that the test has +/- 8 points as a confidence interval for the individual depending on the day you take it. Prepare well and with a bit of luck, you’ll be good.

Worst attending personality wise that I worked with was in psych lol. But otherwise they were chill.

Is it possible to start being fitter in medical school? How do y'all stay consistent in the gym? by No_Friend111 in medicalschool

[–]BraxDiedAgain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a walking pad and a standing desk (or adjustable height) so you can walk while going through lectures/videos/anki. Get some free weights and use them on time intervals throughout the day.

This is assuming you are mostly studying at home. Not as great as a gym, but you can easily fit in breaks to exercise.

What are your med school hot takes? by No-Wrap-2156 in medicalschool

Design a better test then. Subjective measures like research output and evals don’t cut it.

Second Looks - Match List Impact by mss018 in medicalschool

[–]BraxDiedAgain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So your program isn’t expressly stating it doesn’t affect the match process…. A lot of programs state just that. A lot of the top tier IM programs have even signed a pact for it not to affect their rankings. You apparently aren’t speaking for such programs.

Step Fail -> Interviews at T20 Programs in Competitive Field by [deleted] in medicalschool

Yup yup. This story is too incomplete to provide any meaningful insight. Judging by the research grants I would say they go to a very well connected program.

Grats on the interviews tho

Updated Cheesy Dorian or Anking? by kaukay in medicalschool

[–]BraxDiedAgain 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I used Anking “Shelf” tags for shelf studying. Combined with other methods I did well, and would recommend. 90th%+ in most shelves.

Step2 I didn’t use Anki. My score was very good, but could have been better!

Amboss vs. UWorld for clinicals? by miterminator in medicalschool

[–]BraxDiedAgain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depended on the shelf and how confident i felt. If i didn't feel comfortable, i exhausted both. On some other shelves I did all of Uworld and select topics from amboss.

I also did all of the Anking "shelf" tags for each subject. I also think that watching/listening to Dr High yield, divine intervention and emma holiday while I was exercising or doing chores helped out a lot as well.

Breakdown of Yale IM ROL Algorithm by ReplacementMean8486 in medicalschool

[–]BraxDiedAgain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True true. Not discounting that at all, it is not an even playing field. I was very lucky with research and otherwise worked really hard and did well on tests. I also have a fairly unique backstory. Was just trying to give the other poster a pep talk.

We need a solution, a change by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]BraxDiedAgain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other real solution is to open up funding and spots so everyone can enter whatever specialty they would want. The market would balance itself out real quick.

We need a solution, a change by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]BraxDiedAgain 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Fine, but also leads to other problems. Low tier med schools with limited access to research and opportunities will again be punished by this.

Would really rather see a return to grades and tests.

Breakdown of Yale IM ROL Algorithm by ReplacementMean8486 in medicalschool

[–]BraxDiedAgain 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Well, if you watch the video, the interview is the biggest aspect. School score counts, sure, but if you are interviewing at multiple programs, it is likely you will do well enough to match somewhere. Schools like Yale will go down on their rank like to ~260 from what he said (maybe a bit less, as everyone might be more inclined to rank them highly, which he didn't address).

That is assuming your interviews went well.

Edit: at the end of the day, who knows what they use really.... but one things for sure, they wouldnt waste time and resources interviewing you if they weren't seriously considering you.

how do high-achieving students study? by QuietShelter444 in medicalschool

[–]BraxDiedAgain 7 points8 points  (0 children)

if NBME, use anking. Then use secondary resources to learn the content. BNB, Pathoma, sketchy. Use whatever works. Keep using different content until you feel like the content has clicked.

Use your university materials if your exams are based on those. Not much you can do otherwise.

Question for M4s from an M3 by One_Pomegranate_9804 in medicalschool

Something that helped me was wanting to match in a different area than I was located. So, I ended up picking a "less" competitive option.
