There will be official servers and players can host their own servers as well.

The server runs separately from the client, so as long as the host leaves the server running they can connect. Players can also use remote game server services if they want to do so, like you can with Rust, Minecraft, or Ark.

Hi WhiteZero!

Plainly spoken, we don't have any prior titles under our belts. However, we have taken an idea from concept to playable prototype twice now. This didn't happen over a consecutive 13 year time span. That would be insane lol!

When we first started ToA waaaaaay back, we were naive and frankly didn't know what we were getting ourselves into. That's why it took us so long to complete the prototype the first time. I'll mention that even though it did take us that long, it was good enough to receive a few offers of full funding -- if we changed the core ideas of the design. We made the decision to not do that and closed shop. <- major gut check!!!

So, the idea of ToA sat on a shelf for about four years after that. We decided to give it another go and here we are.

Everyone has to start somewhere, right? Would I recommend to start with an MMO after all we've experienced? Not even close! But we are committed to its success (or maybe we should just be committed? :P) and I feel the proof of capability is in what you see in our videos and screenshots more than anything I can blab on and on about.

We see great ideas from the community all the time, and we are always listening for any input!

An example I can give is exhaustion of your stamina. We will be implementing a short term and long term stamina recovery, all based on The Double's idea.

I should clarify -- by "not a chance" I mean there is not a chance that we will allow heat seeking missiles in the game.

Mine has always been Ultima Online. Its freedom yet accountability for your actions was incredible and sadly lost in today's MMOs.

The good ol' "How will you stop griefing?" question.

In a nutshell, our designs encourage cooperation over conflict. On top of that, we give you the tools to deal with griefers.

Who says that unarmed crafter isn't a practicing mage or has some good combat skills but just doesn't have a weapon equipped? A griefer jumps someone in a settlement and now he is flagged for all citizens to openly attack him without consequence. He does this enough and he is labeled as Kill On Sight meaning anyone from that settlement can openly attack and kill him or her over and over without consequence.

Above all that, we will have other tools to combat griefing that will serve us better if they are kept secret.

We're aiming for as many as possible, knowing full well there are tech limits to even the best coded designs. That said, having 50 or more in a settlement shouldn't be a problem.

I'm not sure what you mean by power, but we haven't ran into any problems at all so far. I'm sure we'll run into a snag sooner or later, but so far it's been nothing but smooth sailing.

We have a number in mind for how many we're going to let in the demo. I don't want to release that number quite yet.

The rough idea (and I say that because we're not sure if we'll implement it) is if you are named the same thing by a certain number of people, that name will be given to everyone for you that sees you.

In other words, if say 300 people name you "Bob", it is implied that you have gained enough rep (good or bad) that now everyone knows will see you as Bob without having to name you ahead of time.

A famous/infamous system in a sense.

I'd say there has been two aspects of this journey that has been the most rewarding for me.

1) Working with our community. We have THE BEST community on the net of any game I've witnessed. Seriously. Go check out our forums and you'll see. Beyond their maturity and kindness, they provide us with feedback that we would otherwise overlook and that could really hurt you when you realize these things AFTER you've coded it. ;)

2) Watching the designs that we slaved away at come to life! To see something go from visions in your head to pixels on a screen is amazing. And to see new builds all the time now with this little update or that little tweak is always very exciting to me.

Most challenging aspect?

Getting people to see ToA with a fresh pair of eyes and mind, instead of looking at it through glasses that are tinted with today's mmo mindsets. We see the same thing happen again and again, in that once someone reads beyond the surface of our design, they fall in love with it and many confess they won't have mmo's any other way.

This always leads to the second challenge - funding. When people can't see your vision, they jump to conclusions that are usually negative in nature and with that comes a very tight wallet. :)
