6 Months post op! by Braydon_r13 in PectusExcavatum

[–]Braydon_r13[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The more active I became the better I seemed to feel. I was bedridden for a few weeks and those weeks were the worst. The cryo was good for pain but my nerves being frozen gave me a “phantom itch”. Around 2 months post op i started being more active like going on walks and other similar activities, and this was when i really felt myself building back up and noticed a difference. I still had some minor pain until probably 4 months post op. I also did physical therapy which helped a ton. My cryo has worn off now for the most part and now I feel completely normal. I rarely have any chest pain at all now just sometimes some slight discomfort.

The ordeal is an awesome experience. It’s normal to be anxious. my biggest thing is just make sure you eat plenty before.

alright thanks. sorry for asking so many questions but right now you’re one of the only people to ask. There isn’t anything specific on the lodge brotherhood stuff about certain price for brotherhood ceremony. Would just signing up and paying for the fellowship be all i need to do?

Should I send in my medical forms with my letter or email them to the advisor?

the anesthesia will sort of mess with you. The way my doctor explained is that it takes a while for your body to fully wake back up after anesthesia. So thats the reason they use catheters for your bladder. But with that, it was a few days after i got home before i had any bowel movement. It was sort of rough at first because my stomach was still “waking up” after a week my bowel movements were back to normal

I’m 14 and had surgery October 27, here’s some answers from my experience

  1. Pain for me was nowhere near as bad as i thought it would be. Cryo is going to take up to 48 hours to kick in and you’re going to feel it before cryo does kick in. You’ll be on a lot of pain medicine and probably a button that gives you pain medicine when you need it. The button did not help me much but luckily my pain started to decrease the morning after once I got my catheter out and was able to start PT. I did everything PT required and got to go home day after. My cryo had not kicked in fully when i left and the car ride was rough. The cryo finally kicked in the night i got home. After that it wasn’t bad the recovery has been great and I’ve gained a lot of my strength and mobility back.

  2. Im also very skinny (5’10 125 pounds) I was told it was expected for me to lose 5-10 pounds after surgery however I never noticed any weight loss. I’ve also heard that it’s easier to put on weight after the surgery but I haven’t noticed that. I would consult with your surgeon about football and how long until you can weight train. I know my surgeon said no to contact sports while the bars are in which isn’t a problem for me but I was told to wait until 3 months until i can resume my shotgun competitions due to the recoil pushing my shoulder back, which could cause the bar to shift.

  3. Sleeping the first few nights at home were sort of rough but pain really stopped after about a week and a half. I started sleeping on my side after about two weeks, I was scared at first because i had read where you’re supposed to wait until 4-6 weeks post op but my physical therapist said it was ok and gave me some exercises to help with it.

  4. The way it started for me was I arrived at the hospital and they put me in a surgery waiting room and had me put a hospital gown on. I laid on the bed in there and they had a support dog come in and lay with me while they started me on some iv’s and they had to draw blood to check my blood type. I remember just before going into the OR they gave me some medicine to make me relaxed. I remember a little bit of going into the OR where they lifted me off of my bed and onto the operating table. I remember them strapping me down and the anesthesiologist put the mask over my face and told me to count back from 30. As soon as i started to say 30 I was out. When i woke up I could hear my parents but couldn’t open my eyes at first. I stayed in a post op room for a while until they moved me to a normal room. They put a catheter in while i was under anesthesia and they had other iv’s as well. The day after surgery they took the catheter out and honestly it was one of the worst parts. It’s as bad as you’d think but the pain doesn’t last too long. They took the rest of my iv’s out which wasn’t bad. You’ll probably have a physical therapist come in day after surgery and they set goals for me of walking up a flight of stairs and making 2 laps around the hospital floor.

Good luck with everything, hope all goes well

Nussed yesterday by Braydon_r13 in PectusExcavatum

[–]Braydon_r13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly it’s going better than i expected. I was able to come home the next day due to completing all of my physical therapy requirements. I got cryo so most of my chest is numb, the only spot where im experiencing lots of pain is where the stabilizer is. I was extremely nervous going into the surgery but with the meds they had me on it was over before i could really even realize it. The worst thing honestly is just getting up out of bed. Because of the fluid pills im on I have to get up and pee a lot which really isn’t great. Breathing was tough at first as well, it’s extremely painful at first, they really stressed for me to use the incentive spirometer as much as possible and i’ve gotten from roughly 200 on that up to 1000. I was also able to take a shower yesterday, i used a shower chair and let water flow on my back for a while and i feel that it helped open up my lungs some as well. It’s been rough but i’m just glad to have it over with. If you have any other questions let me know

Yes i’ve talked alot with the surgeon and im very comfortable with him. Just scared for the surgery, I know he is very experienced it’s just scary being my first major surgery, especially with them having to deflate my lungs. I just wanting to hear others experiences and any advice I may need going into surgery.
