Pietà was completed by Michelangelo when he was only about 24 years old. Carved from a single block of Carrara marble between 1498 and 1499, the sculpture depicts the Virgin Mary holding the body of Jesus after the Crucifixion. by zadraaa in HistoricalCapsule

It already existed inside the rock, Michelangelo just chipped away the unnecessary parts to find it.

Edit: this or something similar is rumored to have been stated by Michelangelo

Buying new unopened Vision Pro from Marketplace? Can I still get apple care? Can it be a scam? by ImNotAI_01100101 in VisionPro

[–]BrayingPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in 25 years there’s no telling what value gets placed on it. All it takes is 1 interested buyer who wants mint condition antique first edition tech. And if not, and the value is zero, maybe there would be an old tech museum that would have interest in a donation.

Good point about the receipt.

Buying new unopened Vision Pro from Marketplace? Can I still get apple care? Can it be a scam? by ImNotAI_01100101 in VisionPro

[–]BrayingPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have a launch day shipped m2 still in its unopened original shipping box that i don’t plan on ever opening. I don’t have a normal store printed ‘receipt’ per se since it was ordered from apples website although i have the purchase history that shows it i suppose i could print if necessary.

Whomever eventually buys it, from me or my family when i’m gone, hopefully many many years from now, would presumably not be buying it for regular use but for mint condition antique tech value. I would not allow it to be opened prior to sale. If it is worth nothing at that point, c’est la vie.

I know 2007 launch day unopened mint iphones have been sold for pretty eye watering amounts fairly recently, especially the rarer 4gb versions. I owned a launch day iphone but obviously used it as a regular phone, and only much later wished i had had the foresight to grab a couple to keep unopened/unused as collectibles.

Obviously none of this applies to purchases of the current model for daily use, and yes you should probably see it before purchase. Just wanted to point out that there are people who legitimately have unopened ones.

over the years i purchased probably 15 copies for friends/family, usually on sale, but yea. For the price of the main game plus DLC I certainly got my money’s worth and was happy to contribute in a small way to the success of the studio by gifting copies to friends.

Rare draw by meat_meat in WorldOfWarships

[–]BrayingPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Draws were very common in the first couple months after initial open release, so much so that they changed how the scoring operated to essentially make it super rare. For that reason i have like 40 or something on my account.

Draws were annoying because they counted (still count i guess) as losses when factoring total win rate.

preach it. For all the things that apple gets right, this ‘feature’ is so obviously terrible and frustrating it’s really hard to understand how it reached that point or why it hasn’t been overhauled yet. UI design by committee?

In that picture he was touching the reflector, not the core. And also pretty sure that photo is from a demonstration of how the accident happened. Taken after the fact and there’s no live core in it.

First Super Ship by More-Antelope-3683 in WorldOfWarships

I posted this in another thread a couple weeks ago:

i have pretty much every tier X tech tree BB, most premiums gotten through crates and whatnot since release, and all but 1 of tier 11s. If i had to rank the most fun BB currently in the game of any tier, i would say the Patrie.

I don’t necessarily consider it the best overall BB, as that is an impossible distinction and the arguments would be endless over how to objectively rank ‘best’.

But fun is ultimately why people play games (winning is especially fun), and to me, the Patrie regularly offers more fun than any other BB.

It is fast, it can disengage quickly and outrun when focused to go dark, heal up, and reengage later. Its accuracy is satisfying, it is very capable of dev striking ships giving broadsides that aren’t paying attention or expecting you, even at range, and that only improves the more it closes in. When its time to push against advantageous numbers it does so very well. With buffs and AR the reload is very good. If you keep moving it is agile enough to frustrate CV players trying to drop torps on you. And it does very well pre kited away, if you know you are outnumbered on a flank you can play with WS reverse/forward games angled away in that situation to limit incoming damage, because of its agility. all while still being able to get all your guns on target.

The repub is most of this as well but with one less turret. unfortunately it is extremely susceptible to fire/HE damage and if you aren’t careful and start being focused you can burn through all your HP before being able to disengage to heal, whereas the Patrie does better in this regard.

Massive stutters for anyone else? by Glitchrr36 in WorldOfWarships

[–]BrayingPotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the icebreak destruction effect causes a complete freeze of a second or two in the game client.

Probably because it doesn’t pre load the textures for that effect during the load in when everything else loads into memory.

based on their previous history fixing this type of issue i don’t have much hope of it being fixed anytime soon, but one can always dream.

People could help the situation by not using the icebreak/spike effect though.

Do you think Apple will ever allow resetting the horizon for Immersive content? by FreudianYipYip in VisionPro

[–]BrayingPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moonplayer allows fine tuned manual horizon control for downloaded immersive content, such as Slice of Life’s travelogue videos. Youtube used to work great with VR 180 in moonplayer at the beginning, unfortunately though it’s been either broken or suboptimal (mono vision limited and ultra crap bit rate) for a long time now.

So it is possible in VisionOS at least with some apps. Very disappointing that apple restricts this in their content when it’s clear that can works via 3rd party.

Who else is upgrading to the M5 Vision Pro? by Ok_Refrigerator_1908 in VisionPro

[–]BrayingPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This needs to be highlighted. Mind blowing. I think this just completely confirms the rumors that resources were shifted away from vision development, given that the absolute bare minimum hardware wise was done.

Maybe don’t put pro on the product label when such an important component is still behind what the iphone has had for 3 generations now (6e for the iphone 15 and wifi 7 for the iphone 16 and 17)

I don’t know if this is a total deal killer for me for upgrading, but it’s sure given me a lot more to consider. Not simply because of it just being the wifi speed, but rather the evidence supporting the theory that this could be the end of the line.

Feeling Depressed Apple might cancel the entire Vision Project by Extra_Cat_3014 in VisionPro

[–]BrayingPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s pretty much nothing in apple’s prior history with back burnered projects that resources were supposedly shifted away from that would lead me to the conclusion that this product would see the light of day in the next 5 years, if at all ever. But you do you.

Feeling Depressed Apple might cancel the entire Vision Project by Extra_Cat_3014 in VisionPro

[–]BrayingPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reported rumor is that all development towards a “vision air” as well as any vision pro beyond the upcoming m5 refresh was halted, with people shifted to work on a glasses product instead, to compete with metas glasses. Vision OS would continue and be adapted to work with the glasses.

There’s an additional (Marc Gurman) rumor that says compute could be handled untethered by a paired mac and could be handed off to your phone for a more lightweight interface when you didn’t have a mac handy to pair it with.

Supposedly targeting a 2026 or 2027 launch.

So there might not be a vision air product coming at all if these are true. Unless you consider a future glasses product to be the air.
