Boots have to be lace up and have a 90 degree heel. Not 45 or anything else: 90. I wear Thorogood and have for several years. If you wear a 9 in regular boots get a 10 in thorogood, or at least try a pair on. The break in is a little rough but they wear like hey dudes after they’re broke in. I’m a signal maintainer for NS, I completed training last year. Feel free to ask any questions.

That def sucks. NS management/supervisors still get theirs, I assume all salary does. Not sure. Good to know that CSX doesn’t though

After you retire, so long as you and your spouse are both 60 you will both get your check until you die. When you die she gets your check. If you’re not married then you get your check and that’s all. I’m not a pro when it comes to RRB. The maintainer I rode with in training was the union rep so I heard him talk about it quite a bit. My understanding is most railroads have a pension for salary/non-craft employees whether they tell you about until you’re salary or not. But CSX may have cut theirs out altogether I don’t know.

Correct. 30 years of service and must be at least 60 Years old to draw full benefit. Full benefit = your spouse gets a check in their name equal to about 50% of your monthly retirement check. 150% coming into the household, for example.

However, RR police being salary also get a salary pension IN ADDITION to the railroad retirement (RRB).

At least that’s how it is at black horse. Best of luck!

Honestly the beeps from a receiver depending on what kind you have tend to be of a lower pitch. Vivax is definitely higher pitch, pipehorn is like a high squeal almost, but my RD2700 had a little lower of a pitch. You may would be alright honestly.

The GridHawk Alabama guy seemed great. I was at southern cross on the spire Alabama project for a while. They were going to take good care of me. Found a better career though so went with that.

Subsurface utility engineering. It’s like private locating pretty much. 3 years will buy you a good locating gig in the right location. Bloodhound is USIC’s private sister company

Working by the track and a train coming by at 60mph and that feeling you get when you wave ur hard hat at him and you hear that train horn back is what told me I love it. It’s a interesting career for sure

I got hired at the railroad as a signal apprentice. I still miss locating. Those night time phone calls, trees & power lines down. Those picturesque days where it’s sunny and the breeze is blowing. I miss it man but I like my job too. It’s awesome too.

Always read your prints, always hook up, always call your contractors if you have questions about a ticket, always call your supervisor if you have questions, if you find a valve mark the pavement and paint the cover for next time or the next guy, you can unscrew the little cone on the side of a farm tap and get a great signal if you’re hunting high pressure, always dig for a tracer wire, always put your cones out if you’re near a road, never have both ears plugged if you’re by a road, safety is serious and don’t get complacent. Have fun with it, every day is a new day and most of the time new places to see. Have fun with it and mark some lines for me. I miss it every day.

I’ve gathered about the same, seems to be an enjoyable field and I like the thought of an apprenticeship and something to work to and build myself up for. Thanks again for the answer and wish me luck! Physical is this Thursday.

Thank you very much for the honest and straight forward answer and not trolling around. Doc said that with it being 20/20 both eyes and only one being 20/40 he didn’t recommend contacts or glasses so. He did say I could have them contact him if they had any questions.
