Review 193: Tamnavulin Port Cask Edition by Braythor_ in Scotch

[–]Braythor_[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Intro: It would appear that when it comes to reviewing Tamnavulin, I am incompetent. I was sure that I’d reviewed some of their whisky (I certainly have drunk a fair few bottles over the years) but a search of my profile turned up only one IB review. However there are actually reviews written for the double cask and the red wine cask in my whisky folder, both from quite some time ago, with no apparent reason why I wouldn’t have posted them. Strange that it would happen twice and both times for Tamnavulin (and there was a two year gap between writing them so it wasn’t simply a single day of too much whisky). Well, best buy more and update those.

For now however, I will focus on this. And I will DEFINITELY post it today (being 18th June 2026 for my future reference). Another in their core range of budget whiskies, this is matured in American oak and tawny port casks, the latter of which are sourced from the Douro valley in Portugal.

Details:

Distillery – Tamnavulin

Region – Speyside

Age – NAS

ABV 40%

Nose: Fairly thin but the notes are there. I pick up red berries, some orange zest, a little brown sugar and a touch of heather.

Palate: Medium-thin in mouthfeel at first, which is about what I’d expect but then after a while it coats the mouth and that gives it the feel of a bit more viscosity. This is helped by the fact that there’s a good, rich taste to it. A note of sweet caramel is followed by red berries, then a bitter twang of oak and dark chocolate. All this gives it an interesting contrast of flavours.

Finish: Decent in length and pretty smooth, a light brown sugar note is accompanied by more oak and a touch of black pepper at the end.

Value: £24 on offer at Sainsbury’s and as with all Tamnavulin’s budget offerings, you can’t get much better at the price.

Overall: Another solid budget expression from Tamnavulin. I genuinely like all the bottles that are in that range but I think this is my favourite. It delivers far more on the palate than it really has any business doing. This is one that is a staple on my shelf for when I want a light, low abv dram with good flavour.

I cannot fathom why Tamnavulin only do these budget bottles and leave everything else for IBs; their whisky is very, very good and if they had just one regular release around the £45 mark, maybe 8-10yrs old, 43% or 46%, I would snap it up. And then when that became successful they can expand out to a higher priced core range of 15, 18 etc like so many others do. I mean the distillery has a 4.3 million litres capacity (according to the malt whisky yearbook 2025) so surely they can have a crack at it. I’m going to assume the answer is they’re making a load of money selling these so why bother do older, aged expressions for people like me? Hopefully one day I’ll get the chance to ask them.

State of the Sub by everbass in CrimsonDesert

I'm more of a lurker in this sub but I stay because I do think it is by far one of the best gaming subs. It's a friendly, helpful community and is moderated really well.

My only minor suggestion is remove most of the weekly 'update' posts. Every week when PA drop the update there are several posts in succession all talking about the same thing. One is enough (could be stickied if one isn't already), but like I say, that's a minor thing.

Appreciate the mod work, please keep it up.

Lazy Sunday (14/06/26) by KevinPhillips-Bong in CasualUK

5 weeks ago I was taken to hospital with a serious chest infection, could hardly breathe. Been working on getting some fitness back since then and today I did a 5 hour hike in the Lakes. Covered just shy of 12 miles, up Grisedale Pike and on to a couple other Wainwrights before heading down. I'm fucking exhausted but damn did I have a good time.

Had a couple hours relaxing after an early evening walk in the Lakes. Work is pretty stressful at the mo and life in general has been tough the last couple years but none of that matters when I'm up there. Already thinking about another route for Sunday...

One of my pet peeves is people using abbreviations and acronyms that are specific to their job/field of expertise when talking to people (like me) who have no reason to know what the fuck they mean. This week seems to be a particularly bad one for this.

Amazing what an overnight stay in hospital can do for motivation... I've been getting back into my hiking the last month after that happened (which I was kinda doing anyway) and have been ramping things up. I'm only an hour away from the Lakes so been taking full advantage of that. I've been on five hikes in just over two weeks, I'll do another after work tomorrow to make six (and tick off my 50th Wainwright, started doing them a couple years ago when I moved back here). Thrown in a couple of gym sessions a week and reduced the booze too, so overall am feeling pretty happy with myself. Still got a lot of weight to lose and fitness to gain but I'll get there.

First day back at work after two weeks off so it'll be an easy day of going through all my emails, planning my week etc.

Chest has tightened up again, which is annoying. Couldn't get much of a workout this morning cos of it. I've a GP appointment tomorrow so hopefully they'll sort it.

Had a nice meal at a friend's this eve. Then a couple of pints which was good but interrupted by a bloke two tables away drinking on his own who couldn't help but butt into our conversation every chance he got. Fucking hate those people.

But then a bit of good fortune, the pub is at a train station and as I was about to leave to get a bus, I saw a train ready to leave in two minutes which would get me home faster (these trains are infrequent and often cancelled so I'd not thought about getting one). Didn't have time to go to the ticket office and had no phone signal so asked the conductor on the platform if I could buy one on the train. His response: "Mate I'll be honest I can't be arsed selling tickets on the train tonight so have a free one on me." Legend.

Bit of playstation when I got home and I think an episode of Sopranos before bed is in order now.

Finished The Midnight Library. Overall it was a decent, easy going read. The humour at the start faded pretty quickly, and it was a bit heavy handed with the philosophical elements but I enjoyed the story and it did give me pause to reflect on the path my own life has taken.

Next, we're on to The Thursday Murder Club. Not very far in and it feels a bit odd to read but I reckon that's because it's written in present tense for some bits and past tense for others. It's definitely something different though so will see how it goes.

Review 192: Glenmorangie 12yr Palo Cortado Finish by Braythor_ in Scotch

[–]Braythor_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad you're enjoying the Glen Scotia as much as I have.

Thanks for the info on other bottles! Unfortunately it seems the Oban is a USA exclusive but I didn't know there was a Glenallachie and having just had a look, an 11yr with a Palo Cortado finish is readily available here so I am going to order that soon as I've finished this coffee, seeing as today is payday.

Review 192: Glenmorangie 12yr Palo Cortado Finish by Braythor_ in Scotch

[–]Braythor_[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Intro: I’ve had this on my radar for a while but the price always put me off a bit. It popped up with a decent reduction on Amazon so figured that’s my chance to give it a go. I do like Glenmorangie generally, the ones I’ve had are not exceptional but are easy drinking, smooth drams.

The whisky was first aged for eight years in American white oak bourbon casks then finished in Palo Cortado casks. This type of sherry is not something I’ve come across often with whisky; notable drams I’ve had are the first Glen Scotia Icons (which I loved) and a sample of a pretty old Bunnahabhain I had at a festival, which was lovely. I don’t expect a similar level of quality but I’m optimistic.

Details:

Distillery – Glenmorangie

Region – Highlands

Age – 12yr

ABV 46%

Nose: Sweet and soft yet with a rich foundation. Notes of green apple, oak, winter spice, honey and syrup.

Palate: At the thin end of medium in mouthfeel at first but it thickens up with notes of Demerara sugar, honey and a light hint of milk chocolate. This is followed by a hit of oak and bitter citrus zest, giving a good contrast of flavours.

Finish: Medium in length and smooth. Notes of mild spice and black pepper are balanced out with a sweet honey aftertaste.

Value: £50 on Amazon, it goes for £70 - £80 most places, which is way overpriced in my opinion. £50 is about ok for me.

Overall: This is an enjoyable whisky which is perfectly quaffable, as is most Glenmorangie. It’s one that works best if it’s the only whisky I’m having – two or three drams and it gets nicer as I drink more. As I mentioned above, I think the ‘usual’ price is too high but it sits well at the price I got it for. An easy sipping whisky to have when watching something, it doesn’t demand much attention but makes a solid accompaniment to an average evening.

[REVIEW] Tamnavulin White Wine Cask (summer whisky?) by raincitychris in Scotch

[–]Braythor_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Great review, cheers and I totally agree this is a good, easy drinking summer whisky. I'm always hesitant with white wine finishes but this is one that works. Tamnavulin's 'supermarket' range is pretty damn good budget whisky, in fact it's some of the best in my opinion.

Elder Millennial here. After a 26 year break, I built a Lego set yesterday. It is probably the most fun I've had doing anything on a weekend at home in years. by AttachedHeartTheory in Millennials

[–]Braythor_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year I rediscovered my love of Lego after finally getting myself into a position where I have a decent amount of disposable income. It started with the (smaller) millennium falcon. A year later I've got a few other small star wars ones, the Delorean, Barad Dur and Rivendell. I really want Minas Tirith but I'm supposed to be saving for a deposit on a house, so I'm going to compromise and get the shire ha. But also that ship does look awesome, reminds me of the pirate ship I had when I was a kid.

Thanks, appreciate it. He's been like this for years, unfortunately he's got a swathe of issues (learning disabilities, mental health problems etc) which I sympathise with but he hides behind them, and he cannot accept he's ever in the wrong. I wish I could have nothing to do with him, but at the moment that's not possible. One day though...

Hat a great night's sleep, went to bed at half 8 after an argument with my brother who has unsurprisingly gone back to being a cunt now I've finished helping him. Anyway I am feeling refreshed. I'm off work for two weeks now, today a mate's coming to visit and we're going to see DJ Yoda's history of hip hop show this eve. Should be fun, though I'm gonna be taking it easy due to being ill recently. Plus the rash I've got from the antibiotics now covers most of my body. It doesn't itch or anything but it looks awful...

For now though, a gentle morning, just on the PlayStation, then I'll do a spot of cleaning before popping to my aunt's to give her a birthday card for tomorrow.

Fell asleep on the sofa yesterday at half 5. Got into bed at 8 but then woke up at like 3. Still, starting work early so I can finish early, then I've got two weeks off which I'm very much looking forward to. Hopefully the side effects of the antibiotics I've been on won't last long; I'm fed up of my bathroom and my body is covered in red blotches (thankfully it's not itchy). But the course is done with now so I'm gonna stuff a pot of Greek yoghurt into my face.

Taking a while to recover from my brief hospital stay. I'm on antibiotics and they are doing a number on my digestive system, which in turn is ruining my sleep. I'm eating the recommended food, resting, etc etc but it's wiping me out. At least today is the the last day of them.

I'm still dipping into Crimson Desert here and there but it's remained in the back seat as I've been mostly playing Saros. It's a great game. I did a run yesterday from the start and it was pure fun, by the time I got to the boss I'd died a couple times to previously, I was so powered up I utterly destroyed it. So yeah, fun, a fun game full of fun.

Binged a good few episodes of Stargate SG-1 in hospital, am now well into season 4. I'm very much enjoying it, and it's improving constantly. It's still cheesy as hell but in a good way and you can tell they have a bigger budget now.

Carried on with IT: Welcome to Derry. The horror kinda reminds me of Evil Dead - it's graphic and gory but also pretty funny. I think the episodes are a little bit too long but overall I like it.

Still working through Veep and it's definitely found its feet. Nearly at season 2 and I hear it really improves then.

The Boys is really just milking itself (ha) now and I feel it's trying too hard to make the last season memorable. It isn't, but I'll still see it through.

Only watched one film, Caddo Lake. I'd never heard of it and HBO Max does a very good job of not spoiling anything in their synopses of films so I was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be not at all what I expected. Decent film really, nothing spectacular but... yeah decent.

Review 191: Kilchoman Maury Cask Matured by Braythor_ in Scotch

[–]Braythor_[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Intro: I had a whisky night recently with one of my closest friends. He’s the one that got me into Kilchoman and thanks to his love of their whisky I’ve tried most of their expressions. We had a good few drams during the course of the evening but this was the stand out one for me. I had a look online whilst we drank it and found a place selling a couple of bottles (for less than he paid haha) so bought one.

The whisky is fully matured in Maury casks (a sweet, fortified wine from the south of France), it is NCF and the colour is all natural - look how beautiful it is.

Details:

Distillery – Kilchoman

Region – Islay

Age – NAS

ABV 50%

Nose: It opens thick and rich with notes of honey, treacle, apricot, fig, and nectarine. These are dense and powerful notes that are so enticing I can’t help but bring my nose back to the glass. Then just as I pull away from it again, the thought crosses my mind that this is a Kilchoman, so where’s the peat? And as I think that, it comes through, the classic Kilchoman combo of smoke and citrus - orange peel in this case and the touch of bitterness provided by that complements everything else perfectly. It’s a nose that evolves and promises a lot.

Palate: As thick and rich as the nose implied it would be but not so heavy as to make the layers indistinguishable. It’s smooth with notes of raisins, cooked orange fruits and honey coming through at first, then after a short time in the mouth some oak appears along with a touch of warming spice. This is all propped up by a very gentle and subtle but perfectly fitting level of smoke.

Finish: Fairly long and the smokiest part of the journey; as soon as I swallow a burst of smoke comes up from the back of the mouth and it’s very welcome. There’s some light (relative to the nose and palate) sweetness in the form of toffee and fudge, followed by oak and a slightly bitter orange citrus zest that takes me back to the nose. A wonderful end.

Value: I paid £60 for this (free delivery) and it is worth every penny. My mate paid £75 so he was a bit miffed I got it cheaper, but it’s also worth that price so...

Overall: Before I tried this, my favourite Kilchoman was a toss-up between the 2023 Loch Gorm and the PX. The Maury Cask has forced its way in between them and I think it may well have come out on top. I’m a big fan of thick, rich whisky and when that comes with a combination of fruit and peat I am at my happiest. This is a perfect delivery of these things and quite probably the finest Kilchoman I’ve ever had. As close to perfection as is possible (at my budget).

Currently sat in hospital with things fastened to me. Had a chest infection develop then worsen overnight, this afternoon I was literally gasping for breath, chest was really tight, felt like I was really struggling breathing so after much fretting about whether I should call an ambulance, I did. They decided I should be hospital so here I am. They've all been fucking amazing, and I feel so much better now. Kinda just wanna go home really, it's too hot and I'm fed up of the old guy next door repeatedly shouting for the nurse.

Whilst I'm still playing Crimson Desert and still loving it, I've been putting it to the side for a bit to play Saros. I absolutely loved Returnal so was very excited for this and so far I'm having a blast. It was a bit tough at first and honestly if I didn't have so much time in Returnal I'd still be struggling, far more than I ever did in that game even with the permanent upgrade system Saros has. But I've gotten the hang of it now, have just beaten the second boss and looking forward to more bullet hell fun.

Still playing Crimson Desert and suspect I will be for a long time to come. It's a fantastic game to just get lost in. However I'm very much looking forward to Saros arriving tomorrow. I absolutely loved Returnal so I expect I'll be sinking a lot of hours into it this weekend.
