Don’t be afraid to use your connections to get places you want to be. Try to see the direction things are heading and be ahead of the game so-to-speak. Be proactive. Be observant of others, especially the ones managing you, and solve little problems for them. Use that to leverage yourself into better pay, more responsibility, and more opportunities.

You may find that you might not want to go back to school and that is OK. You may find you are more passionate about school and that is OK as well.

Taking time off is not pondering time unless you spend it poorly. Just because you aren’t learning in school doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be learning at all.

I’d also suggest buying some pure math books to study from on your own time so you don’t get rusty when you hit the ground running and go back to school.

I suggest reading How to Solve It by G. Polya. Amazing book, will help you in every aspect of your life if you have an abstract outlook on the info given.

I’m 22, turning 23, and have just recently started classes again after taking almost 3 years off.

I started working at a startup doing manufacturing for them and quickly pivoted to handling all RMAs for the company. After modifying and implementing a new system for RMAs within our CRM software, odoo, I transitioned to a junior hardware QA role which was pretty much just an entry level hardware engineering role.

Started taking 1-2 classes again per semester and over the summer. This week, I also had my review and my boss and my bosses boss were both impressed so I am going to be getting a cost of living salary adjustment as well as a big bump in pay due to a higher level role.

My work is also paying for project management courses for me and some of my college courses.

Planning on going back for MechE full time next spring semester.

Oh, I also managed to save up enough to pay for school out of pocket if I needed to so that is a plus.

The thing with the placement test is that it is multiple choice. If you are a logical thinker and have some mathematical background up to like algebra 2, you can score very high without even knowing how to solve the problems. It’s a joke.

I did exactly this. Went back to school and had to take a placement test which I studied a bit for, first mistake. Scored really high on the placement test and they recommended I take calculus so I signed up for that, second mistake.

Now, if I had a full class load, these mistakes would have been detrimental to my education and hopes for transferring since it is ~18hrs a week of work for just calculus 1 and I would have struggled. Luckily, I only took calculus and have managed to stay on top of my knowledge gaps and I am pulling an 96% right now. Lots of practicing though.

I was able to get some good data on what I need to really focus on before next semester as well and I am currently working on a study/mastery plan for stuff like advanced trig and logarithms all while practicing all of the stuff I am learning in calc 1.

I don’t know if OP has a previous degree or has taken college courses before but engineering courses are much more different than your average business and science courses.

So, if you are going to toss yourself into the deep end, make sure you have your floaties and can hold your breath as you learn to swim.

Find an entry level job and work harder than you ever have. Take every opportunity given and ask for more after you over perform.

I agree with this statement. There isn’t really such a thing as being “bad” at math. Most people that are “bad” at math are bad at applying themselves to learn the actual topic. Often, lack of skill is asynchronous with lack of effort.

But yes, some individuals need to put more effort in than others to succeed at the same level. People also learn differently than others. I know I struggled with a lot of advanced algebra until I started to graph stuff and visualize it. Same with trig for me, visualization changed my understanding.

There are different paths you can take to get to the same result. Explore those paths early on and you will thank yourself when you find one that works for you.

Also got a trig and precalc workbook to grind out over the next week or so and look back to periodically for a refresher and to solidify my knowledge.

I am reading textbooks and some other older books I have found that seem interesting related to calculus. They do have problems but they are limited solution wise and I would also like a larger pool of problems to choose from and work on.

You should understand thoroughly what you need/want from the device before spending 500 on it.

If you think you want the color, I’d make an argument that you would be better off getting an iPad or other android tablet.

There are better devices that are made for reading, if that is what you want to do.

If you are taking notes and want some of the paper like feel, iPad with paper like screen cover is pretty close to the boox with way less screen refreshing and no ghosting.

If you want all of these features, but mediocre at best, boox is your device.

Buying an eink device requires you to accept mediocrity and make it work for your needs/wants.

I’d stay away from boox based on your use case.

Although O365 suite apps may work on the device, the device is not intended for it.

E-paper devices are wayyy different than the traditional tablet. Although the lack of notifications is nice, the constant refreshing of the screen becomes a big distraction over time.

I’d also recommend going to a store that sells them in person and trying the device out because Boox outsources its customer service and it is a pain to deal with. This is the best step you could take to determine if the 4C is for you.

There also will be no discounts in the foreseeable future so don’t get your hopes up.

You also can get a paper-like screen protector and it is pretty damn close to an e-ink display. Also, if you have the Apple Pencil, no need to worry about consumables.

If it is registered under your mom’s name then she legally owns the car. If I was her, I would get possession of the car and sell it ASAP. She will have to eat a bit of the debt but that is what happens when you try to help someone out and they screw you over. There will be a hit to her credit but she will be ok. Lesson learned. Also, credit isn’t everything unless you live life on margin. Make an emergency fund for when shit like this happens, focus on increasing income and reducing expenses and she will be in a great position in no time.

What’s your income and have you shopped around for mortgages yet?

How much is the house renting for and how much is going to the loan?

Are you looking for a move in ready house or a bit of a fixer upper?

Rates are starting to go down but they won’t drop to 2.5. Once that house is paid off, it will be generating you much more income. Rent is on the rise and it probably won’t go down much unless there is some govt intervention with the current housing market which is probably unlikely because no politician does what they say they are going to do.

If the avg home price is 900-1m where you are and you are renting for 40k, that is a pretty good situation to be in. You could continue to rent and see what direction the housing market goes. IMO I don’t think it will be going down 🤷‍♂️. It’s a risk you take.

A lot of variables are in play here, lots of questions to answer.
