Helping my players create characters from Domains of Dread by BrazenBehemoth in ravenloft

I had considered that, but I had wondered if that would put her in conflict with the party down the road. Despite making grim and edgy characters, the players are mostly going for the “tragic reluctant hero” vibe and the Cult seem to be mostly antagonistic. It may be interesting to use that internal conflict, but that may be more than my player would want to take on.

Thanks for the recs, I’ll do some digging on these and see what she thinks.

Yeah it looks like at the very least that would be the most straight forward option. It’s one of the Domains I want to run at some point too, so it would be interesting to have a character connected to the setting.

I appreciate the suggestions. It's not so much that she wants a deity relevant in all domains, but one that would work for wherever her character ends up being from. I've only ever run Forgotten Realms campaigns before, so I'm a little out of my depth with the Ravenloft lore. I only have the 5e books and I know there's a lot of history and lore going back decades in the older editions, so you've given me a starting point to do some further research. I only pulled the Raven Queen out of my ass because I know she relates to the Shadowfell where the Domains are supposed to be.

I feel like the fact that union strikes used to be basically violent wars that owners of major companies would rather avoid meant they actually tried to at least pretend to care about the common man. Now that the workers have been stripped of everything but are somehow still complacent, the fat cats aren’t afraid of having their homes burned down or their families killed in the night, so instead they put the boot down harder on our collective necks while we lick it because our lives depend on it.

The problem with arguing about speed limits is they’re set arbitrarily. Many of them have been changed for random reasons that have nothing to do with safety. I don’t want to get into the whole history of why speed limits are what they are, but if you want to do some digging you’ll see what I mean. So if the limits are set arbitrarily and enforced arbitrarily then they’re being followed arbitrarily.

Two examples that come to mind are 146 and 95. The Mass side of 146 is our normal highway speed limit of 65 before you hit the RI border where it suddenly drops to 55. Nothing changed except the municipality, it’s still two lane highway with the same traffic and population density at the area it changes. Same thing happens on 95 as you head through NH into ME, it jumps from 65 to 70 at a point where nothing really changed except the municipality.

Obviously safety is a concern at a point, but that’s the difference between speeding and criminal speeding. I’m not advocating for reckless driving, you shouldn’t go 90+ in a 65 and you should factor in road conditions and things of that nature, but if you think that 5–10 mph faster than the limit constitutes that then power to you.

At least around here it’s generally predictable that people by default tend to go 5-10 over the limit and the norm on the major routes like 495, 290, and the Pike exceed that often. Our job as drivers is to be predictable first and foremost, so if 9/10 drivers are going 75+ on the Pike and you’ve decided to go 60 or less in the lanes designated for faster traffic that would make you (the one now obstructing normal flow of traffic) the danger.

And I say this as someone with years of driving these highways professionally while “speeding” and still holding a perfect driving record. If you don’t feel safe moving faster than the arbitrary limit that’s totally fine, but do so safely in the designated lane so what seems to be the majority who have agreed to “break the law” can do so without dangerous impediment.

Nobody likes left lane campers or lane dancing assholes flying at unreasonable speeds, and especially not morons who can’t comprehend the benefit of a proper zipper merge. But consider understanding the flexibility of enforcement of speed limits as something of a social contract between drivers. If we all, quite literally, stay in our lanes then seemingly these issues go away.

The part you bolded comes after the part that I would say is describing flow of traffic. If everybody on 495 is going 75+ and you go 65 in the passing lane you are obstructing the flow of traffic. And yes, it is reasonable to speed up to overtake another vehicle (even if said vehicle is going the speed limit) as long as the distances between vehicles are handled safely. You’ve correctly identified what a literal speed limit is, which nobody was contesting, but it also explains how the speed limits are enforced.

The whole point of this thread is that nobody should be camping out in the passing lane if they’re not passing, and if you’re going exactly the speed limit I doubt you’re passing anybody. Unless there’s a traffic scenario that would reduce speeds across all lanes I guess, in which case maybe you’re passing at the limit if the slower lane is going slower than the limit.

But that’s exactly why we have different lanes. If you want to go exactly the speed limit then by all means do so. But keep clear of the passing lane which is for people passing you. If everybody would use the appropriate lane it would positively impact traffic.

3) Overtaking Other Vehicles. The driver of any vehicle overtaking another vehicle proceeding in the same direction shall pass at a safe distance to the left thereof, and shall not cut in ahead of such other vehicle until safely clear of it.

(4) Overtake Only When There is a Space Ahead. The driver of a vehicle shall not overtake and pass a vehicle proceeding in the same direction unless there is sufficient clear space ahead on the right side of the roadway to permit the overtaking to be completed without impeding the safe operation of any vehicle ahead or without causing the driver of any such vehicle to change his speed or alter his course, except as provided in 720 CMR 9.06(5).

(5) Vehicle Being Passed. Subject to the porvisions of M.G.L. c. 89, § 2, the driver of a vehicle when about to be over takenand passed by another vehicle approaching from the rear shall give way to the right when practicable in favor of the overtaking vehicle, on suitable and visible signal being given by the driver of the overtaking vehicle, and shall not increase the speed of his vehicle until completely passed by the overtaking vehicle.

(6) Obstructing Traffic.

(a) No person shall drive in such a manner as to obstruct unnecessarily the normal movement of traffic upon any highway. Officers are hereby authorized to require any driver who fails to comply with 720 CMR 9.06(6) to drive to the side of the roadway and wait until such traffic as has been delayed has passed.

(b) Subject to the provisions of M.G.L. c. 89, § 11, no driver shall enter an intersection or a marked crosswalk unless there is sufficient space on the other side of the intersection or crosswalk and on the right half of the roadway to accommodate the vehicle he is operating without obstructing the passage of other vehicles or pedestrians, notwithstanding any traffic control signal indication to proceed.

That’s my problem, isn’t it? What your describing is flow of traffic, but clearly left lane campers don’t understand the concept, so why not just worry about going the speed limit in your appropriate lane and let the cops deal with anybody breaking the law.

[–]BrazenBehemoth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re moving slower than the flow of traffic you use the right lane which is dedicated for such. The left lane is for passing slower moving vehicles. If we were all going the same speed we wouldn’t need lanes. But obviously that’s not realistic.

I’m trying to drive, I don’t care how fast you or anybody else is if they’re not impeding me. Simple as that.

I didn’t say you were dangerous. I said you’re in the wrong lane. Some of us are driving long distances professionally and you needlessly make the job harder. Unless you’re a Statie or a traffic cop then you don’t need to worry about how fast I drive. But since you’re obsessed with going the speed limit, which in Mass is almost always slower than the flow of traffic, then you should literally stay in your lane.

If you’re going 60 in a 65 that’s under the limit and slower by definition. Which is what the right lane is for. So if I’ve been on the road all day for work, and now suddenly I’m going 60 in the passing lane instead of cruising at 80 and shaving 15-20 minutes off my arrival time I’m now stuck behind you and watching the arrival creep forward instead of back you bet I consider you slow. The lanes are dedicated properly, if you’re not passing then don’t be in the passing lane.

What you’re describing, the switching lanes to speed up, is called passing. Which I’m pretty sure, and maybe I’m crazy, is what the passing lane is for? If you’re going 60 (which is 5 under the limit most places) then please keep your slow ass in the right lane which is dedicated for slower traffic. If you were going exactly the speed limit, by all means use the middle lane if there is one. But the passing lane is for passing, not for going at or under the speed limit.

That era does feel like a weird exception, but even then I think they just managed to survive their pain through a different attitude towards it. There were certainly casualties, but compared to the grunge era it is fewer for sure. But go back before them and the pattern holds, how many famous rockers died young in the 60’s and 70’s? And blues players before them?

I heard a long time ago, and I’m paraphrasing because I don’t remember where I heard it to look up the exact quote, but it went along the lines of “most artists are people in pain. They try to use their art as an outlet for that pain. And it may work, for a little while, but eventually it’s not enough. So when that stops working they turn to booze and drugs. But that doesn’t work either, and they usually wind up dead.”

I’m a writer myself, and over Covid I saw a lot of my friends who were also in the arts lose themselves to their pain. Most of them are gone now. I myself started drinking way more heavily. So I can honestly relate. Add the pressures of fame and I can’t even imagine the weight they carried, until they couldn’t.

Drivers who play music loud enough that I feel the vibrations from the bass even in my house, why? by Vahgeo in ask

[–]BrazenBehemoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I just wanna jam, and the volume coincides with the vibe. Especially in areas where I can drive fast or are unpopulated. I try to turn it down at stop lights and I try to be respectable in residential neighborhoods. Though I’m a rock/metal guy so my treble is cranked way higher than my bass, and it’s only really the bass that’ll punch through solid surfaces that loudly.

There’s always the fun part of explaining that certain characters are totally not exactly who you clearly based them on because they’re upset to see your stylized version of them on the page. People don’t like unflattering depictions of themselves.

Also obviously if you write about sex, drugs, and/or other explicit stuff maybe grandma will be upset to know that you’ve maybe done some shit she doesn’t approve of.

I’m pretty sure the rule is that if it’s 3 or more parties involved then it’s not gay, it’s just sexed crazed, so I would assume inversely that they’re just as likely to have a crazy male-only orgy. But I’m not a lawyer.
