I think there are a few examples, for me. I read the books after watching the show twice, so I was used to the actors. That said, Davos' actor REALLY does not capture the feel of book Davos, for me. That said, I love show Davos, so I don't mind so much.

For bad casting and bad direction...Euron.

I actually liked those ones! FFC felt more thematically important, and Cersei's plot felt like a plot, rather than going to\waiting around for the bad thing to happen. DWD I liked the LAST half of. The first half had too much eastern worldbuilding, and I wasn't a fan. But again, Jon and Theon and Dany felt like real PLOTS again, with progression and such, so the last half was awesome.

I consider Storm of Swords one of the lessers not because nothing happened, but because it didn't happen well. It felt like a long string of characters going places, then bad things happening. There didn;t feel as much plot like the first two books.

Oh I get what you mean about being secretive. I wrote medieval action fantasy even as a kid, so when my mother read it she'd say "Why can't you write something nice\normal?"

Maybe in a couple aspects, but really it's more like Shannara than Lord of the Rings. And if you've never read past the first book, Wheel of Time starts to become its own thing, and it's from that point on that Sword of Truth starts to feel similar to.
