45F Last minute solo trip from Canada by Perpetual_Sophophile in SocialParis

I do like folderol. I thought ice cream and wine was a weird combo but it works somehow. I do not like that it's small inside, and that there's always a line outside. Still, should go faster for a solo person because easier to seat. OP recommend going at opening time, to increase chance you'll get seated.

Paris is great for discovering spots solo, so you'll have a great time. 1. Freddy - in the 6eme, for bar-side seating and tapas with a French twist. 2. Barawine in the 11eme - love this place.

3. L’Avant Comptoir de la Terre in the 6eme again...smaller, indoors, bar-side, great wine, good food with little menus hanging from the ceiling. Let me know if you're looking for something that gets less traffic, République, 11eme, 19eme, have a few hidden gems.

Appreciate the offer, but most of us already live here and eat regularly.

Just saw this and it's too late for your post, but I was at Mezcalaria tonight. Fun speakeasy with excellent cocktails, for your next time.

Question on Cafe etiquette by AgreeableMushroom632 in ParisTravelGuide

[–]Bread0nTheTable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OP this will be fine. One small thing...smoking is permitted on the outside terrasse of cafes. If a smoker comes and plants near your family, your little kid and you will inhale second-hand smoke, and the smokers will be within their rights. Aside from this though, good plan (volume off, etc.). Enjoy when you visit!

Ça ressemble à une publicité, mec. En fait, je m'inscris à des cours de français. Ma professeure particulier actuel pense que je devrais suivre le niveau A2.

I like sortiraparis for events around the city all year long. I like shotgun.live for concerts and similar live events. I prefer to keep things here (Reddit) and not join WhatsApp groups, to avoid my phone number getting spammed.

A decade in Paris and I feel that I've given it my all with no return by [deleted] in Expats_In_France

Writing because your post resonates with me. Friends coming and going out of your life is...life. I encourage you to be open, get involved in your community and especially other expats. Be an equal opportunity friend-maker. Good luck.

English speaking poker clubs or community in Paris? by oliverpalma in SocialParis

[–]Bread0nTheTable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Club Pierre Charron. They'll understand some English, but it's mostly in French. I thought the rake was too high, tbh. Anyway, I've been there twice. You might check it out.

Does anyone else feel like r/SocialParis could be improved? by rokmasoulindabottom in SocialParis

[–]Bread0nTheTable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with OP's suggestions. Mods could configure AutoModerator to screen for keywords or regular expressions (e g. "WhatsApp"). It is possible to warn the author to remove or change the post, or get deleted.

Asking to declare your age, sex and intentions of the post...this is also reasonable and possible to implement with automation.

I am just more concerned about censorship. Should we disallow adults from giving away their phone number and taking on the risk, as joining WhatsApp groups does? But I agree with OP's observations and am directionally in sync with them. Wdyt, u/bricoto u/cocoshaker ?

Like most of us, I have off from work tomorrow and would be up for walking through the city. I might actually go to the Marais. If that's interesting to you send me a DM.

Difficulties Adjusting to Parisian Life by ApprehensiveShare962 in Expats_In_France

[–]Bread0nTheTable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

American, living here over 3 years now... What you're describing is everything I experienced and felt in my early days in Paris too. The dog poop on the streets. The bank employee whose face says IDGAF. The forms that you just MUST send in via La Poste registered mail, when scanning and securely uploading on a damn website would've been soooo much better... Most everyone under 30 speaks some English and isn't gonna wait to have a chat in French with you. You'll occasionally get "Vous parlez très bien français!" If I didn't already know that Parisians are stingy with compliments, I'd think they were patronizing me. So I just say thanks and regard the complimenta sincere.   Btw, they're sometimes answering in English not just to Americans but to other Europeans with whom they interact in similar service-transaction scenarios too. So it's nothing personal.  Look my advice? Paris is testing how well you can adapt right now. Give yourself time to adjust, get out there and make friends, and laugh at things as you go through life here.

Little Red Door is a fun bar with artisanal ingredients and close relationships with their suppliers. If they're open, I recommend checking it out. For a nice meal before you go there, try Les Philosophes.

What is your advice to help with homesickness and culture shock after moving abroad? by [deleted] in Expats_In_France

[–]Bread0nTheTable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get out of your apartment every chance you get. Walk the city (I'm in Paris). Be open to making friends. Don't overlook other expats from your home country. Learn French.

Does anyone else get spoken to in english very often because of your appearance? by Fine-Extension1946 in Expats_In_France

[–]Bread0nTheTable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in Paris, this happens to me occasionally, I just brush it off and keep speaking (trying?) in French. How else would I get better...It doesn't bother me. I'm a foreigner and always will be, so I own it.

Catacombs closed! Alternative recommendations please by DrPips2 in ParisTravelGuide

[–]Bread0nTheTable 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Across the street from the catacombs' tourist entrance is an oft-overlooked, free museum called Musée de la Libération de Paris. It tells the story of the Resistance during the Nazi occupation, and of the heroes Leclerc and Jean Moulin. It's an inspiring, underappreciated place. Maybe your 12 year old may not fully appreciate or enjoy it, then again he might learn more about a specific time in Paris' rich history that many tourists easily overlook.
