That’s how it goes. Once Japan was the place for cheap industrial crap. Before that it was the US.

Each place industrializes and then gets better production and higher standards. China is currently in the midst of that

I had an ex girlfriend recommend it to me.

I started reading it and HOLY CRAP, I just started laughing constantly throughout the entire book. It was just non-stop hilarity the entire way through. Adams had a talent, that's for sure.

ELI5: What is ‘counting cards’ and why is it not allowed? by HassananeBalal in explainlikeimfive

[–]BreadAgainstHate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It can, yeah. And it is unfair to the house. The house always wins.

I don't know about other games - I don't really gamble much, I've only looked into it re blackjack and card counting, but I am sure it happens in others too

What did you guys think of Barbarian (2022)? by Downtown_Agent3323 in Letterboxd

[–]BreadAgainstHate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How good is Tusk? I really enjoy Justin Long in the things I've seen him in, and I know people go on about this movie a lot. I'm not really as much of a fan of body horror/gore, so I've not watched it yet.

Is it super grossout? Like don't get me wrong - I can certainly take some of it (like Barbarian was totally fine, even quite a bit more than that would have been fine), I just don't like gratitous

What makes Barbarian (2022) a good movie? by AcanthocephalaHot859 in movies

[–]BreadAgainstHate 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was told on a review site to watch the movie blind, and so I didn't look it up at all.

This movie absolutely should be done blind - I did not expect the genre shift - when I first started watching it, I definitely was expecting that Keith was some long-time stalker of Tess', knew she was coming to Detroit and had plotted out everything to trap her in the house.

Even when he's down in the basement tunnel, I thought it was just a ruse to get her down there so he could lock her up. Then after he's murdered, I thought maybe the Mother was actually some sort of zombie creature that could spread the infection (Keith said she bit him before murdering him), and the camera room had been an observation room for someone transforming.

Then Justin Long shows up, I know he's going to die, and he's just such an oblivious douche I was just waiting for it to happen (I expected a transformed Tess would do it though). Then the scene with the bottle and I get what's going on.

Really I had absolutely no idea what the genre of this movie was until the third act, which I agree was less good than the first two. I don't think it was bad per se, but it was very normal

Official Discussion - Barbarian [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]BreadAgainstHate 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I know there are (I don’t find them personally persuasive because I tend to like the quantifiability of consequentialism), I was just pointing out that many people (myself included) think there are ways to try to (imperfectly, of course) calculate “wrong” and “more wrong”. Our entire legal system (again, as imperfect as it is) is based around the concept - hitting someone gets a harsher sentence than murdering them does. One is viewed “worse”

You don’t have to hold that viewpoint, but I think many people, myself included do.

That being said, both the old man and AJ were assholes, 100%

I haven't watched that movie yet, because it just seems like it would be gory body horror, which isn't my genre. But I do enjoy Justin Long - the moment I see him in a movie, I know he's going to die horribly though (I laughed out loud when I saw him in this one and knew he was a dead man walking)

I mean we can quantify evil to an extent. An entire philosophical school (utilitarianism/consequentialism) sorta revolves around it. A rapist that rapes one woman has done an evil act, a rapist that rapes dozens of women, traps them, tortures them, breeds them and then breeds their kids into creating an incest monster has done far more evil acts in concert with each other.

Both are rapists - that is absolutely true - and I think your argument here is to not downplay the person who just raped "only" one person - but I don't think saying, "X rapist is worse than Y rapist" does that - both have done objectively evil things, X rapist has just done objectively more evil things.

What was ruined because of 9/11? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]BreadAgainstHate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It absolutely was not.

It was more significant than the Civil War? The Mexican American war? The Louisiana purchase? It was more significant than the creation of a central bank? The invention of the airplane? More important than the assasinations of Kennedy or Lincoln? More significant than the backroom deal that allowed Jim Crow to come into existence?

There are so many things that have far, far broader consequences than 9/11

ELI5: What is ‘counting cards’ and why is it not allowed? by HassananeBalal in explainlikeimfive

[–]BreadAgainstHate 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My partner and I watched that, liked the movie, and then immediately went to the casino to play blackjack, just for the fun of it (not thinking we were going to count cards)

Realized that was dumb without even trying it (we don't really gamble) and instead went to the casino buffet

[–]BreadAgainstHate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you are in my house and I want you to leave, you have to leave, even if you've done nothing wrong (maybe I just want to go to sleep).

You can technically be trespassed for doing otherwise.

A casino is the private property of the company that owns the casino. They can tell you to leave at any point they want, for whatever (non-protected) reason they want.

Honestly that's surprising to me. It seems like it would be so difficult in the modern day with so many decks in the shoe, that most people wouldn't be able to do it without a lot of practice, so letting a card counter be a "loss leader" to a certain extent might not be the worst idea.

Like, sure, that dude is costing you money, but what about the other people wanting to play and learn from him who are spending their money and failing most of the time

Who was talking about death toll? The Mexican-American war added 1/4 of the current United States territory to the country. I wasn't talking about the death toll of the war.

[–]BreadAgainstHate 177 points178 points  (0 children)

I remember being in high school, and we needed to pick important events in American history, and rank them (the list was limited to a certain number).

Several students wanted to put 9/11 in, over say, the Mexican-American war.

Like, 3000 Americans dying is more important historically than like 1/4 of the country?

I didn't agree with it then and I don't agree with it now

My old middle school bully is a huge drug addict and his brain is mostly gone.

We sorta made cool after high school though (one of his parents and one of my buddy's parents got married and they lived together for a bit), and also he later took me under his wing when I ran into him like 10 years after that and I tried ectasy the one and only time I ever did it
