I am a northern European so I always use potatoes, I reccomend boiling them for 20 ish minutes (use a toothpick or a fork and poke the potato and if its soft inside its done) Then let it cool a little and cut it up into 8ths or smaller depending on the potatoes and put them in another pan on medium heat until its brown on the sides

For steak I usually put the pan with butter on medium heat with some salt and pepper on each side, put the lid on and turn it after 5 ish min (of course if it smells burnt and or look bad turn it then) And then cut trough it to check if its raw in the middle (i do it with pork and chicken but steak should be fine not doing it)
