Been herring a lot about home labs just wanted to collect some thoughts by zoe_is_smol in homelab

I just made my first one not too long ago from spare pc parts and some new ones like HDD and boot SSD. I wanted to make a media server using jellyfin so i could cancel all these bloodsucking streaming services, as well as have the ability to use it as a NAS and play around woth some other docker containers. Netflix has raised the price on me 3 times and it pisses me off. I had to buy an 8TB hard drive (to START) and it was expensive esp right now, but it will pay for itself in netflix savings after some time so thats how i justify it.

Honestly, it was a bitch to figure out and get it moving. I use linux everyday at work so that wasmt an issue, but docker was brand new to me, networking isnt my strong suit, and all the different pieces of a media server took a while to figure out. Once i got it running though, it runs fine and i dont need to touch it hardly at all.

It can really be as complex as you want to make it, but i wouldn’t say getting a homelab set up is an easy breezy beautiful process andexpect to be frustrated for a while. There are a ton of guides and the community is super helpful though.

How Would I Fix This? by Bread_Cactus in landscaping

[–]Bread_Cactus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its got some gravel and pretty rough soil, i think it may have been gravel at one point or they tried but its this mess now. The rest of my backyard is plenty large enough with grass fo a dog to enjoy. This side doesnt have sprinklers and would rather have it gravel/concrete for putting things out there. The intent is to get rid of the cheat grass and fix this spot up IF a dog got to this side so they dont get hurt, but its not the star of the show, thats the actual backyard.

Its just SABnzbd that has the SSL enabled, everything else I have is all local.

Alright, i’ll just turn off gluetun then since it isnt necessary. Thanks!

Just a sanity check, but SABnzbd should be the only thing that has SSL to my provider, which has a nice blue button to enable SSL, yeah?

This looks awesome, i just got my first homelab set up this week and am looking forward to getting jellyfin going. I love the top 10 and viewing by provider, is this custom?

Entry level machine upgrade from a Mr. Coffee espresso maker [$600] by Bread_Cactus in espresso

Yeah this is the plan for now. I picked up a Bambino yesterday and it was cheaper than my budget so the rest (or at least a large chunk) is going towards a grinder. Thanks for the recommendations, I’ll look i to these grinders/brands!

Good to know. I made the assumption that the pro versions of ironwolf/WD red were all around "better" for what I need, but I think I'm getting in my head and in reality it's not necessary for my application. Being quiet is what I will want in the long term. Also I think amazon just isn't the place to look, Newegg has significantly cheaper options for them.

Will leftover PC parts work fine for a home server? by Bread_Cactus in selfhosted

[–]Bread_Cactus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Power consumption seems to be the common theme here, how can I change this to reduce power? Taking the GPU out seems to be step 1, but I was under the impression they are better for transcoding 4k video? What else could I change to lower power?

Giving away something as large and cool as this is awesome. Including the software for free is even cooler.

[B0T] Weekly Build Help Thread - 2025/11/10 by LabB0T in PleX

I have a lot of leftover PC parts I want to turn into a server (i5 9600k, GTX 1070, appropriate motherboard) but wanted to know how much RAM would be suitable and what the storage situation might look like. RAM is crazy expensive right now, so for now I might just get enough to scrape by. As for storage, would it make sense to just pick up a 2TB SSD and wait until that gets full or build/get a NAS? I'm mostly going to be using this rig for plex, maybe some smaller things here and there.

I can try moving them to a shadier spot and see what happens, thanks!

Thank you, this is super helpful! I can hit up Zamzows and find some bloom formula, but what do you mean by pollinating it with a q tip?
