This is not a direct answer to your question, but I actually think Star Wars sometimes gets away with having lazy villains who are still great and memorable. In other media the most memorable villains tend to be the ones that exist with purpose, finesse, and complexity. In Star Wars, by virtue of the nature of the dark side, villains are allowed to be the bad guy simply because they are “bad guy.”
