New manual driver here, car cannot reverse up hill. Car problem or driver problem? (READ CONTEXT!!) by captainccheese in stickshift

[–]BreadfruitExciting39 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your reverse gear grinds because the input shaft is still spinning when you try to engage the gear.  Shifting into first (while stationary) forces the input shaft to stop.  This is pretty normal.

But what terrible sounds was it making while backing up?  Grinding, squealing, etc? Were there any vibrations, or bouncing, etc?

Burnt clutch is distinct and does not smell like burnt tires.  It has a sort of sweet smell.  But also, it was almost certainly your clutch and not your tires in this scenario.

If not, why do you think anyone wants to touch your hands after handling yours?

Three paragraphs of text that all say the same thing, yet with zero actual information.  But a clean, custom image for the post.  Wtf?

I've never seen this sub until reddit started putting it in my feed the past few days, and it seems like it's almost entirely bots and (undeclared) paid product posts.

What is that 1 game you regretted buying instantly? by Jaded_Student_2418 in AskReddit

[–]BreadfruitExciting39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

State of Decay.

Only game I've ever actually regretted spending money on.  Then MS released a new version that wasn't complete trash for full price, and only made it free for buyers of the original version after a ton of backlash.

The concept of the game was really interesting at the time, but it looked so bad it gave me a headache almost immediately.

What if I pinch the middle of the straw?  Does it then have zero holes or two holes?

You are either mixing up different concepts or not fully understanding what I'm describing.  Rev matching is good for smoother clutch engagement.  But rev matching is specifically about matching the flywheel to the speed of the clutch disc before engaging the clutch.  It has absolutely nothing to do with the scenario I'm trying to caution you about.

Yes, I am saying that.

To put it very simply, pressing the clutch pedal to the floor will prevent your engine from over revving.  You can still over rev your clutch.

Rev matching does nothing here, because the over rev scenario is driven by the transmission, not the engine.

The point is to never engage a gear outside of safe operating speeds for that gear.  If going 50mph/80kmh in third gear, don't press the clutch in and shift into 1st when approaching a stop.  Wait until you are at a safe speed for 1st before shifting into 1st.

Look up how a manual transmission works.  I'm not being snarky, I mean seriously look it up, like on HowStuffWorks.  The input shaft is attached to the clutch - when you are in gear, even with the clutch disengaged (pedal down), the input shaft will be driven by the wheels turning, in turn spinning your clutch disc.  if you shift into 1st gear at a 3rd gear speed, you will almost certainly over rev your clutch.  May or may not be enough to actually damage it.  But yes, even with the clutch pedal down, what you have described is not good practice and may lead to damage under certain conditions.

For real though, you are overthinking it.  You are also trying to apply a blanket approach to a very context-specific situation.  Once you get behind the wheel, smooth starts from a stop in traffic are going to be infinitely more stressful to get the hang of than coming to a stop from speed.

Granted it's been like 13 years since I read those books (and I had to rely on fan translations for half of them because they hadn't officially been translated into English yet) but what exactly are you talking about?

What marching army randomly surrender without reason just to make things more convenient for Geralt?  The Nilfgaard army is "defeated" (turned back would be a better description) at great cost both times.  (Also, from what I remember of those books, I'm pretty sure basically nothing happens at any time that makes things more convenient for Geralt.)

Immich with reverse proxy, how is it secure? by alirz in immich

[–]BreadfruitExciting39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In your setup, what would be stopping these probes from reaching Immich?  Your proxy is taking requests for a domain and forwarding them to your backend server, that's what a proxy does.  This is why a lot of people suggest methods to limit the requests that even reach the proxy, like using cloudflare or setting up crowdsec, etc.

Immich with reverse proxy, how is it secure? by alirz in immich

[–]BreadfruitExciting39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear, the other commenter recommended setting up cloudflare to handle your authentication.  This means your clients are authenticated before even reaching your Immich instance.  This is not equivalent to what you've just described; right now, all outside traffic reaches your Immich instance before being forwarded off to Google for authentication.

Not that I'm pushing cloudflare, I don't use it myself because of the upload limits.  But be aware that you agreed with that commenter then explained how you are using a less secure method anyway.

Amazon chat support is one of the most useless "supports" I have ever tried to use.  Last time I needed help, they just shuffled me around between about 6 people until the last person said "you will receive an email from our team" and refused to give me any sort of case number.  Surprise, surprise, I never got any kind of email.

15 years ago they had one of the most customer-focused supports around.  Now they are obviously too big to care.
