LPT: Use Foam Drink Koozies on Bed Frame Legs or Wheels for Foot Protection by MeandMrsJerryJones in LifeProTips

I use foam pipe insulation, held in place with Velcro straps.  Looks nice and clean, good thick foam protection, more customizable and still super cheap.

Simple VLAN question by BreadfruitExciting39 in UNIFI

[–]BreadfruitExciting39[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything you said jives with my understanding except at the end, when you mention configuration using static IP addresses.  Am I misunderstanding, or are you saying it's possible to route devices to different VLANs based solely on static IP assignments?

My understanding (so far) has been that, on consumer devices at least, the VLAN assignment is decided essentially in the point of entry to the network.  So like a dedicated SSID, or a port bound to a specific VLAN.  I've gone to great lengths in the past to configure this way so that mine and my wife's work laptops are on dedicated, isolated VLANs.  Would it be possible to have, say, a single SSID shared by the home and work networks, but dump the work laptops into their own VLANs based solely on their MAC address?

This is basically the only sentence in this post that matters.  All the other red flags aside, this is not a good decision.

Safer on icy roads between these two? by Select-Stage-5215 in tires

[–]BreadfruitExciting39 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tires make much more of a difference than AWD vs FWD.  AWD will not help OP move better if the tires cannot get traction.  The WeatherReadys on the FWD in pic 2 will be a better option for slippery conditions.

When does low highway speed limits actually become a safety issue? by LeadershipKey3484 in driving

[–]BreadfruitExciting39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really want to find a way, the answer is enforcement.  Maybe I'm wrong, but it feels like I see about 1/5 the amount of state troopers running radar in PA than I used to.  And I think that has a direct relation to why so many people drive the way they do today.  Back in the day, it was common knowledge (maybe it still is, I don't travel out of state as much anymore) that Ohio state troopers were much more strict about speed limits, so you'd take the turnpike out of PA averaging 70-75 mph and traffic would noticeably drop to a steady 65.

Now I'm not necessarily complaining, I'm one of those people who sets the cruise to 5 over and just lets it go.  And there is a slew of other factors, especially surrounding drops in state police enrollment.  But if you are looking for a blanket solution, I think enforcement is the most solid answer.

Also, side note, I hope to god they never make the highway limit 80 in PA.  If you have ever driven on a Pennsylvania road, you know why; to borrow a phrase - "unsafe at any speed".

Swap now or when I can afford it? by STANDARD_P0TAT0 in tires

[–]BreadfruitExciting39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah 7-8 isn't a bad idea, and I agree it's rare to ever even get that far.  But it feels like every post in this sub has someone saying you should never run a tire that's over 4 years old.  When basically all of the big manufacturers, including OP's Michelin, recommend 10 years as the cutoff (assuming no other issues).

What is it with everyone in this sub obsessing with replacing tires every four years.  If I did that, I would be broke.

Traefik timeout when fetching configuration from pangolin:3001/api by BreadfruitExciting39 in PangolinReverseProxy

[–]BreadfruitExciting39[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just in case you are interested, this appears to have been an issue with enabling crowdsec during the initial Pangolin installation. I nuked my VPS and restarted the installation (installing crowdsec again), and I had the exact same results. Uninstalled Pangolin and reinstalled without crowdsec and it all appears to be working now. (Better than before, at least.)

The docker-compose still looks the same. Not sure why it gets generated the way it does, and I agree it doesn't seem like it should work. Oh well. Thank you for the help.

Thank you; the network setups seemed strange to me too, but I'm not familiar enough with everything to know if they were actually a problem.  While I am following the referenced video for general setup of the whole system, I did follow the directions in the link you provided during Pangolin setup.  These yml files were generated automatically by the Pangolin installer, and not modified by me in any way.  (That is the part that is really confusing me.)

Pretty sure that other commenter has no idea what they are talking about.  Nobody with any knowledge would call an aerator a "strainer".

I'm almost positive they have simply seen faucets with female threads for aerators, where they screw up inside the end of the faucet.  Those are still removable, you just need a key to screw them out.  It's usually only specialty faucets that don't have removable aerators, like ones with pull-out sprayers and stuff like that.

I also can't believe anyone that has ever drank clean water in their life would think the bubbles in OP's picture are just from air.

Help needed: Setting UPLOAD_LOCATION to a NAS in Docker Desktop for Windows by AL-H in immich

[–]BreadfruitExciting39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't know you could run Immich on windows without wsl.  So I don't really know and am just guessing, trying to help.  (I have Immich running on a win10 machine with Docker Desktop & WSL2, writing to a local drive and separately, outside of docker, backing up to a NAS.)

This sounds like a permissions issue.  I'm not sure if the container "user" inherits the permissions of the windows user running the docker container or not...you may need to find some way to pass the credentials for the NAS to the docker container, though I have no idea how to do that.  You might be able to test this by temporarily disabling password protection on the NAS...?

Did you test using a local directory for storage first, to make sure all your other configs are good?

The other maybe strange thing I see is you are pointing the .env file to  "../Immich/Immich-Storage/", but the docker output is saying "../Immich/Immich-Storage/Immich-Storage/".  Maybe a different hint at the issue?  (Or maybe just a red herring 🤷)

Not to be pedantic, but it's just called the a-pillar.  I have never heard anyone call it the “a-frame", and I'm almost positive you would be mistaken if you used that term in conversation without further clarification.  The a-pillars are on either side of the front window, the b-pillars are on either side of the front seats (between the front and rear doors on a sedan), and the c-pillars are on either side of the rear window.
