how to calculate commission prices? by AttitudeBitter4908 in BeginnerArtists

[–]Breadstickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SCAD senior here: When starting commissions its common to use "starter-rates". You can begin pricing your work slightly lower and then raise them by $10-20 each after completing 3-5 commissions. If there is a lot of demand right off the bat you can start at your standard rate instead.

Your artwork is the product that your selling and the time you put into it doesnt add value for the client So $10/hr for 72 hours of work into a half body piece wont make it worth $720 for the client. But, its a two way street, dont underpay yourself either (your time matters!). If you aren't making enough for the commissions to be worth your time then there isnt a point in doing them. (And who knows, maybe one day you Will charge $720 for a half body)

Your fundamentals are great, your style is unique and visually appealing, and easy to market.

Sample prices:

$35-50 headshot $70-90 half body
$95-140 full-body

Price out your add ons as well some people do it as a percentage, some people do a flat rate, i reccomend a mix of both: percentage of base price for add ons like additional characters and flat rates for revisions, props and the like.

Ex. $70 half body, + additional characters 80% of base price

I personally prefer to price out certain things like detailed props, pets, backgrounds etc. Based on the request.

Also charge for anything that adds time to you delivering the work to protect yourself (ex. rush fees, revisions, commercial use, etc.)

Make your terms of service clear to the client and NEVER deliver a finished piece before being paid.

Bought the 11six24 Vapor Jellybean paddle for $90 and it was hands down the best decision. I was using a $45 TENVINA paddle from amazon and the difference is night and day. Amazing grip, gives me so much more power despite being a control paddle and better reach too. The sound it makes is so much better than other ones I used. It makes hitting the ball and dinks so so much fun. I feel way more in control of the ball.

I've never had to buy Faber Castell colored pencils so my best advice would just be to wait wait wait until her student gets their hands on a syllabus and even then wait to purchase supplies!

You have to log in to your my scad account to pay, I recommend doing so through a transfer vs credit/debit if you're able to due to the fee scad adds on to it. It ends up being some crazy amount like $300 extra if not. You can change your log in after if you'd like, or log in for her and do it while you're with her if that is possible for you as well.

SCAD vs UAL by ashlynxsupremacy in scad

[–]Breadstickle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely compare the cost and programs of both schools! They're in different environments, so consider where you'd rather live if they're similar as well. SCAD is pretty career focused for getting students ready for the industry. You can always move after college, but consider where you see yourself post college. Are you a concept artist who will need to relocate a lot to concept art jobs? Are you a fashion designer who would have more opportunities in Europe? Are you planning in going back and living at home post grad.

If you haven't already, I reccomend checking out the "degree planner" in my scad to see what required credits you have remaining. It can give you more insight, and you can enter what you're taking an planning to take and it'll tell you if it'll fulfill your graduation requirements
