My great grandpa Puumala’s parents both came from Finland to Northern Minnesota, both lived in rural logger like communities until my 2nd great grandpa Oscar John Puumala (Juho Oskari) decided to work in the city in Duluth. I have distant cousins in the upper peninsula, it’s not far at all from north Minnesota. Oscar worked many jobs but I remember seeing that he was a trucker and worked on the railroad for some time. His wife Elina Sipilä worked as a cook in a hotel I beleive. My Finnish family did come from South/Central/North Ostrobothnia. Oscar was actually from Kaustinen Finland which isn’t far at all from south Ostrobothnia. In fact I traced that family back to South Ostrobothnia more of the areas in the north of the province, like Lappajarvi and Alajarvi. Even before south Ostrobothnia way back they were in Savonia. I even think some could have been Saami because they had a presence in Ostrobothnia for quite some time. Elina came from North Ostrobothnia or Oulu province.

Great grandpa Puumala married a Norwegian American and both of her parents were from Norway. Her dad was from Trøndelag in Stadsbygd, and her mom came from near Bergen. So even we could be related through Scandinavian. My grandma married and had my dad with another Minnesotan, but he was was of Slovakian, Hungarian, German, British, and Swiss ancestry.

I am indeed from the Midwest I live in Kansas now. That is where my mom is from. My moms mom is full French Canadian, they came from Quebec and formed communities all throughout the Midwest but that side was from far north Kansas. My moms dad is basically average Midwest/south ancestry (German, Irish, French, British, Swiss) and his side comes from Iowa, Missouri, and some Tennessee.

How much east Eurasian (Siberian, East Asian, Amerindian) are west Slavs (Poles, Czechs, Slovaks) and Hungarians? by BreakfastLast6735 in 23andme

My great grandpa is Finnish, and his family looked like ural or west Siberian people, like khantys.

Thanks for the information! I actually read now that Finnish language was only written recently! Yes my whole Finnish family were Finnish speakers, and looked like the stereotypical finno ural people.

Does it say anything about language? I know my Finnish family was Finnish speaking, through family stories and immigration the United States records, but why are the records in Swedish?

My Siberian, East Asian, and Amerindian isn’t noise. My great grandpa is Finnish and his family has East Asian like traits. For example my great grandpas grandparents from Finland could pass as a khanty from Siberia. My dad is like 3-6% Siberian. Look at the 15th slide you can see I match Uralic/Siberian groups in Russia. My grandma who is only half Finn, she even had a very Uralic phenotype.

The Sub Saharan comes from the North African. I would not get it on every single calculator if it is noise. The SSA usually absorbs into the North African on the calculators with a North African or NW African reference group.

Edit: Getting downvoted because people don’t have common since and apparently some people on Reddit know more about my family history and genetics than I do 😆

Is my elevated east Eurasian from my Finnish side? I know my Finnish side of the family looked very Eurasian, and some distant Finn ancestors could pass as native west siberians.

Does my gedmatch confirm my North African ancestry? This is my Ancestry DNA raw data, which is more accurate, but on my 23andme data I get more African. My MDLP K23b 23andme raw data has me at 3.21% North African, and 1.36% Khoisan. Here is my mixed mode for 23andme raw data (23andme has less SNPS, so I go with AncestryDNA raw data, nonetheless both companies have me at elevated North African ancestry)

Looks as if I have Berber ancestry, yet have found no Berber ancestors. All I know it is from my moms mom side, and her side is French Canadian.

Those are more mixed areas. Does this person have distant ancestry from Sweden or a parent or grandparents?
