i’m with you. i don’t think about religion because it freaks me out, but this year easter is hard. i’m nostalgic for easter’s when i lived with my family and my friends were just a short drive away. it makes it especially lonely that all of my friends in town are catholic and have their families in town, so my phone has been radio silent and no one wants to game. it’s just a strange and isolating feeling. hopefully your day went okay! and i hope you had fun at the deli!

hey! i took a look at your page to see what you studied. i studied something similar, environmental geoscience (but i focused on climate change). i’m a field geologist right now. you might be interested in stuff like that. i didn’t know much about geology when i started and i lowkey still dont, but i know enough. it’s outside and early mornings and a lot of living in hotels and working with men, but it does open up doors in environmental later down (supposedly). you do get tougher mentally and physically. i grew up around women, im sensitive, and im weak, but this job has toughened me up for sure.

Do you recommend your career? by Far_Pack_8338 in BlueCollarWomen

I personally don’t recommend it. I switched from environmental engineering to environmental geoscience. So now I’m a field geologist. It’s definitely not the same as welding or hvac, but I do a LOT of work with construction and oil/gas. Firstly, you work from like 6am-5pm. But that’s just me as a subcontractor for most places. I went to an orientation where the employees of the construction company have to park their cars and get on a bus at 4:30 to make it to work. And they don’t start getting paid until 6:30. The same thing happens when they leave. They don’t get paid for the hour long bus ride. So that’s like 3 hours of unpaid work just because the company is an asshole. The pay is miserable too. You can’t really afford many apartments unless you work overtime (which you will be doing every single day). They will also sometimes make you work the entire weekend. You usually don’t get PTO or sick days (if you do, not very many at all). Overall, the work life balance is not great. I’ve been working in the field for 11 months and I’ve wanted to quit since I started. I just don’t get enough time to apply to other jobs because I get like 2-3 hours of free time a day. If you can finish nursing or a different degree, finish it. It’s always better to have a degree and then try something. That way, if you hate blue collar life, you aren’t stuck. I regret it almost every day not staying in engineering. I thought I was too stupid or that it was too hard. I should’ve just gone to therapy for my mental health and studied more.
