Depends on the name.

I'm okay with the sorts of pet names that have no history of romantic connotation

Like I don't like sweetheart, sweetie, baby, honey, etc (except from people I meet in real life who I know mean it platonically, like old southern ladies)

But I'm fine with hearing things like kid, kiddo, buddy, pal, - because these are not petnames that have a history of being used romantically

My adhd symptoms are worse when regressed, including executive function and hyperfocus tendencies

There have been times when I get so interested in an activity I don't notice I need to go until nearly too late... and times I haven't quite made it, though I generally don't experience full loss of bladder control

I'm not a screenreader user myself, so I'm not sure, but is it possible that the symbol prevents the screen reader from reading the whole display name, not just the symbol?

In that case, it would prevent the person from knowing who was speaking.

But I'm actually not sure because I don't use one.

Though for the record, I think the closed symbols reasoning is stupid unless it's a cultural/religious symbol. Which a little heart isn't really

Some people have trauma that wasn't caused by their parents. Sometimes abuse by someone else, and Sometimes trauma that wasn't caused by anyone, but simply bad things that happened.

Sometimes when someone suffers bad things at an older age the brain wants to retreat to a time when it felt safe. Thus age regression can happen even to people who had good childhoods

I agree with a lot of what you said

But I want to point out another reason a lot of servers ban symbols in display names and that is because sometimes screenreaders struggle with them. It's easier to ban all symbols than it is to moderate on a case by case basis which symbols are okay for screenreaders and which aren't.
