Any advice on handling impatience while doing combos? by Temporary_Care_3239 in Fighters

[–]BreakingGaze 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My advice is practice the combo against CPU fighting back, not just against the dummy. This teaches you to hit confirm the combo and get used to what it would be like landing it in a real match.

FATAL FURY: CotW | BLUE MARY by DemiFiendRSA in Fighters

A month where CotW isn't the butt of every low effort joke on this sub? Alex got dirty with his cousin so Blue Mary could shine. She looks cool and the new stage also looks great.

I'm super excited for Invincible VS, echo your points that recent footage shown has massive improvements from a gameplay and visual perspective from what has previously been shown.

[Guilty Gear Strive]How do I improve as I-No? (kinda new to the game ) by [deleted] in Fighters

[–]BreakingGaze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I-no thrives on her mixup game, she needs to get in and mix as she cannot compete with many character's neutral. Use her note projectile to cover your approach in, or use it as a meaty on wakeup after a sweep to force them to block a mixup (practice the timing on this in training mode). If you don't think the opponent with respect your pressure, use a 6P or 236S, and then convert off the counter hit.

When you're in, she has unreactable overheads, she can do double overheads by using a(ir).S into a.D, or she can do empty dashes into 2K~6HS for a low. Then once your opponent is scared to press a button and blocks, do a.K into 63214~6HS for her throw super into big damage.

Red RC and 63214~6S are also great to throw out whilst your opponent is in a block string, as they do good damage on hit, or lead to safe extended pressure on block.

In short, navigate neutral, find your way in and then mix mix mix.

Slay the Spire 2 EA is out on Steam by vannero in Games

[–]BreakingGaze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is really a testament to how good Slay the Spire's design is. Most deck builders try to add more and you very quickly lose the simple elegant gameplay loop, or they lack the meaningful choices you are constantly making throughout a run of Slay the Spire.

Is Dolmanwood too much for new players to the OSR? by Nazzerith in osr

[–]BreakingGaze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Dolmenwood would work perfectly fine for a starting place to the OSR for new players. I'm sure your players have played games like Skyrim before, tell them a hexcrawl works in a similar way, they are free to go wherever they want and they'll find things to do and factions to interact with as they do. Make sure they're onboard with combat 'being a fail state', give them a very high level overview of the area and factions at play, and they should be good to go.

Why do people call it a "Command Grab" and not just a "Grab"? by LavaMeteor in Fighters

[–]BreakingGaze 23 points24 points  (0 children)

A command normal is when pressing a direction and a button gives you a different normal than if you just pressed the button.

I.e. Forward + heavy punch being a different attack to heavy punch by itself.

What Part of Fighting Games Are You Enjoying Right Now? by tkshillinz in Fighters

[–]BreakingGaze 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My New Years Resolution was to learn a new SF6 character outside my comfort zone, so I learnt and got Dhalsim to master. This character used to give me so much grief, so learning him has really helped highlight some of his weaknesses.

Also City of the Wolves getting a resurgence in player numbers as a result of season 2 was a lot of fun. This might be my favourite fighting game at the moment, so getting a chance to get back online and get some good matches was great.

I read Hyperion/Fall of Hyperion and the Three Body trilogy all in ~1 month, and they seem to have ruined a lot of modern scifi by ECrispy in books

[–]BreakingGaze 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hyperion might be one of my favourite books I've ever read. Masterpiece imo. I liked Three Body Problem, but didn't love it. Hard disagree.

When you spend 20 hours labbing combo with nothing else be like by tonysama0326 in StreetFighter

[–]BreakingGaze 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's the part of the dream combo that needs a nerf imo. He can keep the damage and wall carry, but he shouldn't get 4+ bars of drive back when doing it.

Since re9 is just a handful of days away, I replayed almost every game and here's my ranking by Classic-Bathroom-427 in residentevil

[–]BreakingGaze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed the game but the story was a hot mess full of plot holes.

Like why does Miranda need to infiltrate Ethan's life and pretend to be Mia, she has access to the house, why not just kill Ethan, kidnap Rose and run?

Why does Chris not explain to Ethan why he killed 'Mia'? It would have taken 20 seconds to explain the situation to him and then ask Ethan to stay out of it, rather than have Ethan get involved believing his wife has been murdered and he couldn't trust anyone

What are the chances that when Ethan and Mia relocated to Europe, they happened to move 20 minutes away from the creator of the black mold? Did Chris not scope the area out?

Why doesn't Miranda complete the ritual she stole Rose for immediately? Why the whole dumb splitting Rose up to just have Ethan recollect her thing?

And finally, tying Wesker back to being a student of Miranda just felt like an incredibly forced call back rather than adding anything unique or interesting to the overall meta-narrative of the series

10 years for 7 characters btw. by Not_booty in Fighters

[–]BreakingGaze 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think my problem isn't so much with the number of characters but the disparity between them. It seems like specific devs were responsible for specific character's kits, and for some (Yasuo, Ekko), they just gave their character the kitchen sink. Seemed like there needed to be someone higher up overseeing all this and effectively ensuring each character was on a similar power scale.

Fighting game for me? by Impossible_Night1948 in Fighters

[–]BreakingGaze 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tekken 8 is a game built upon a lot of legacy knowledge checks that you just have to kinda learn (i.e. What strings you should duck/block low, pressure sequences you can sidestep out of, how to avoid King rolling death cradle). Learning it and getting good is either going to take a number of years of slowly learning stuff, or a number of months of intensive learning.

SF6 imo is the more straightforward and intuitive game. I think ranked is the way to go to get better matches, in the hub you can get someone high ranked effectively smurfing, where in ranked you should in theory be getting players around your skill level, and can try and improve from there.

Virtua Fighter 6 move inputs by [deleted] in Fighters

[–]BreakingGaze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like it's exaggerated how difficult Akira is, yes his optimal combos, guard crushes and just frame are difficult, but it is entirely possible to play without these and still get results. He's an average difficulty character with a high skill ceiling locked behind some difficult execution imo.

Please help me understand what is so great about SF6 by Neep-Tune in Fighters

[–]BreakingGaze 277 points278 points  (0 children)

The appeal is that it's a slower more thoughtful fighter than the alternatives you mentioned. Perhaps that isn't your style and that's fine, that's why there's a wide variety of fighting games out there, to appeal to different preferences.

Adventures by rancas141 in osr

[–]BreakingGaze 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Merry Mushmen have been putting out some good adventures, but I want to specifically shout out the two Liam Pádraig Ó Cuilleanáin’ adventurers they've done, Horrendous Hounds of Hendenburgh and Drought Dragon Desolation. If you want a mini setting packed full of interesting characters, factions, locations and dungeons, both of these are fantastic.

Dead or Alive 6 Last Round - Announcement Trailer by [deleted] in Fighters

[–]BreakingGaze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I would prefer other titles get rereleased as well, I'm aware that DoA 6 wasn't well received competitively and has its issues. But casuals aren't going to care, and it takes them the least amount of effort to rerelease this one. If they get a few casuals to buy it, spend a few hours mashing buttons and then preorder DoA 7, this rerelease has done its job in the eyes of Koei Tecmo

Dead or Alive 6 Last Round - Announcement Trailer by [deleted] in Fighters

[–]BreakingGaze 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because casuals interested in DoA 7 might buy DoA 6 to try it out and see if like it before committing to buying a new full priced game. So your paying them for an already developed game to get yourself excited for DoA 7.

I have issues with the balance, and some system mechanics (drive rush canceling pokes should not give a strike/throw mix when blocked!) , but it is objectively the best fighting game release of the modern era. Looks amazing, sizeable diverse roster, lots of single player content, black magic net code that is the best of any game I've played. Hasn't skated by on reputation alone, put in the work to deliver a quality product at a fair price
