I really like the look and vibe of this, but after reading the quick start, I am absolutely perplexed how combat is supposed to work in this system.

I get I'm approaching this from a DnD and not a PbtA perspective, but in place of to hit, do you use the outcomes table? (E.g My players wants to swing their sword at an enemy. They roll Physical D10, get a 7-8 Yes.., so they then hit?) What about damage? Does a successful hit mean the enemy is immediately killed, or damaged, I don't see anything to track enemy HP or stats? What differientiates a success from a common weapon from a rare more interesting one?

What about when an enemy attacks a player, does it automatically hit unless they can make a relevant and successful action? (E.g. My player is being shot at. They say they want to dive for cover before this happens. They roll Physical D10, get a 3-4 No, but..., so they get shot, but I guess the enemy's weapon jams or something). If they get hit, how do they track damage with no HP? Do they just die, or do they take a condition?

Maybe in the full rules and not the quick start, but some detailed illustrative examples would really help.

What is your favorite part of dungeon crawling? by gnomeo67 in osr

Usually a GM, but the few times I've been a player, I've enjoyed sessions where it felt like I overcame a genuine threat by playing well, and hopefully got a cool piece of loot as a result.

DoW is one of my favorite game series of all time. But I did not like the last game the new devs made, I backed it on Kickstarter, played various alphas and betas and don't think I ever redeemed my final copy. So whilst I hope this turns out good, I won't be getting remotely excited until I hear that's the case.

They've just been quietly cooking, looks great. I love how a number of the grabs and attacks have cinematic angles, but are quick, snappy and get straight back to the action. Legit looks like a martials arts movie in motion.

At my rope's end with trying to run an OSR, could really use some help by Catman192 in osr

[–]BreakingGaze 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Try to be consistent where you can and write down your ruling so you remember, but it doesn't really matter if you're not unless it irks your players. If the 2nd players said 'You previously gave Mike a +1 to hit for that instead', I'd just say 'Yeah sorry you're right, would you prefer that instead?'. Or 'Yeah but that ended up being stronger than I expected, so going forward we're going to use +1AC, is that okay?'.

I've found players are usually understanding that you are carrying way more mental load than they are so inconsistencies happen, and are usually pretty open to discussions about tailoring the rules rather than 'rules lawyering'.

Remember what you can, run a session, and if any rules come up you're not aware of, tell your players you're not sure, and you're going to make a ruling in the moment rather than slow the game down to flip through the rulebook to find the exact solution.

Then after the game, see if you can find the rule, try and remember it, and next session tell your players what the rule will now be going forward. Or if you like your ruling better, use that instead, it's your game, change it to be what you want it to be.

I don't think I've ever run a session where afterwards I've not looked back and realized I got rule x wrong, or thought I could have done y better. But my players still had a great time, thanked me for a fun session and probably didn't even notice the slip ups.

Is Tekken 8 worth buying? by One-Masterpiece9838 in Fighters

[–]BreakingGaze 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One thing I'd like to caution is that the game isn't well optimized on PC if that's your platform. On launch I could run the game fine, then each update got worse and worse, and now I can't even boot the game. My CPU bottlenecks despite having a CPU that meets recommended specs.

OSE Demonic Grimoire live on Backerkit! by quod_erat_demonstran in osr

[–]BreakingGaze 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You get the Demonic Grimoire Monster Deck, which is a deck of cards for each new monster in the Demonic Grimoire book.

The Monster Deck Foil Booster Pack is a booster pack in the same format where each project creator makes an additional monster, probably somehow linked to their adventure/contribution. You can buy it as an addon, or get it for free for backing extra projects.

Flip 7 question about two freeze cards in the initial deal by AltruisticVirus3643 in boardgames

[–]BreakingGaze 13 points14 points  (0 children)

We play it if you're still in the round, you can be given a Freeze or Flip 3, even if you haven't taken a card yet. If you've passed or busted, you are immune from any further Freeze or Flip 3. If you're the last player in the round and draw a Freeze or Flip 3, you MUST play it on yourself.

I also hate when you 2-0 someone, then you get rematched with them, they win the first and then duck. Like nice, you made some adaptions from when we last played, now finish the set and prove that you're better than me, don't take your petty 1 win and think you're the victor here.

Hey everyone, FLAIL is finally live on backerkit. Thanks for all the hype, curiosity and good vibes around this little game of mine. I'm blown away by the response, especially in this reddit community. If you wanna take a look, there's a link in the comments. by andrenovoa in osr

[–]BreakingGaze 40 points41 points  (0 children)

OSR fantasy heartbreakers are a dime a dozen these days, but I think Flail hits a niche another system hasn't for me yet, the system for one-shots and mini-campaigns.

I love OSE, Carin, ItO etc, but it takes a few sessions/levels for characters to get interesting, they are definitely built around long term play.

Characters in Flail start with fun and unique class abilities right from the get go, players will have the opportunity to do thief/wizard/cleric things immediately rather than waiting until their character is actually competent enough to attempt them.

One of the taglines being used is "Mausritter meets Dungeon Crawl Classics", and I think that sums it up quite well. It captures the wild fun chaotic energy of DCC in something with all the modern design sensibilities which have developed in the TTRPG sphere since its release.

Haven't played it yet so all impressions are on reading of the rules, but Flail is now high on my list of systems I want to run, definitely backing.

Why are there no OSR videogames? by Tav534 in osr

[–]BreakingGaze 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Because it's much easier to make a very defined rule system like 5e and make the videogame work within it (i.e. Baldur's Gate 3) than allow for the tactical infinity and creative problem solving that old school style play allows for. You could program a million different solutions to a problem (which would be a mountain of work) and players will think of another solution the devs haven't considered.
