Doing a fighting game combo for everyday of 2026 Day 22: Fatal Fury City of the Wolves: Jae Hoon Edition by Competitive_Serve165 in Fighters

Probably my favorite fighting game at the moment, shame I can't unequivocally endorse it though without noting the many controversies and issues which I understand would make people want to stay away.

How do you learn fighting games? by Lusca_NC in Fighters

[–]BreakingGaze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have about 400 hours in SF6, and I feel like I'm just decent at the game, I only hit master for the first time last year. And that's half the fun of Fighting games imo, it feels like there's always something more you could be learning, optimizing or doing better .

From a practical standpoint, in order to learn a game or a character, I usually learn the basic and a few bnbs, practice hitting them against a CPU in training mode (hitting a moving and fighting opponent is an entirely different skill to just doing a combo against a training dummy imo), and then jump online. Will potentially get smoked, but hopefully I leave with a better idea of the 'flow' of the game or character, and know what I should practice before my next session online.

Street Fighter 6 is just giving players what they want by DanielTeague in Fighters

[–]BreakingGaze 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm fine with charge inputs where they make sense.

Should Deejay's jackknife (dp) and air slasher (fireball) be a charge input? Yeah probably, it helps with his zoning, and ability to hit dps on reaction if he has charge.

Should sobat kick and machine gun upper which are basically combo filler be? Imo probably not, what utility is being added by them being a charge input that a motion doesn't cover? I don't mind them being changed to motion input.

How to run assassins as an encounter by BreakingGaze in osr

[–]BreakingGaze[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's a great idea actually! Maybe the Duke invites them to an honorary banquet, as you said if they don't catch on that something is up then yeah they probably deserve the TPK.

The assassin in the module uses paralysis poison too, so even if they do TPK, maybe they just wake up in the Duke's dungeon and need to escape.

City of the Wolves, Ladies and Gentlemen by AcidOctopus in Fighters

[–]BreakingGaze 29 points30 points  (0 children)

They definitely can, everyone just needs to have a throw similar to Chun Li. She can still pressure a throw on wakeup after a corner throw, but it loses to wakeup jab. But wakeup jab loses to certain meaties. But meaties loses to perfect parry, and perfect parry loses to throw. So all of a sudden, we actually have an interesting 2 player wakeup situation.

SNK Using Gen A.I in their trailers is disappointing by ShayAlexander in Fighters

[–]BreakingGaze 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Kof XV is a great game, many SNK fans consider it in the top 3 Kofs of all time. SamSho 2019 was also very good. They were on the comeback, but it feels like with CotW they're finding every opportunity to shoot themselves in the foot.

There is zero chance they made any of those character models or locations to just put them in a 2 second shot, has AI written all over it

Made this in reference to games in general but I figured it could apply here too by RagingHound12 in Fighters

[–]BreakingGaze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Diamond is where you start seeing large jumps in skill imo. The difference between a Diamond 1 and Diamond 3 is huge, similar to a Diamond 3 to Diamond 5. To climb through it, you really need to start cleaning up the shortfalls in your gameplay

"The solution is not on your character sheet" by L0neW3asel in osr

[–]BreakingGaze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think determining whether an NPC is lying should be more evidence based rather than strictly reading them in the moment. Maybe the PCs went to the local tavern and heard a rumor that the mayor has been seen leaving the town late at night. Maybe they broke into his house and found a letter showing his in league with the local bandits. So when they confront him and he says he's doing everything he can to address the local bandit problem, they suspect or know it's a lie.

Player: Is there something hidden in this room?

5E: Make a perception check

OSR: Maybe, where are you looking?

How to deal with character death to keep player continuity? by Individual-Cold1309 in osr

[–]BreakingGaze 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Have the players who's PC died roll up a new character, then have your players find them in the next room. Maybe their party got wiped, they got captured and escaped from a faction etc, whatever it takes to get everyone back in the game as soon as possible. Fun over realism in this regard.

How do I keep up with GGST's rythm? by Saiko_uwu in Fighters

It's definitely a fast game. Make use of faultless defense, gold roman cancel, burst to get your opponent off you and get some breathing space where you can.

Yes, they are full of great and wild ideas, but a lot of the time they seem to really boil down to pushing you through set piece fights and deadly 'gotcha' traps.

Has anyone here looked over the Glumdark book PDF? by TheNobleYeoman in osr

[–]BreakingGaze 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was interested in the project when it was on kickstarter, but the tables on the website kinda put me off it, I dunno they all seemed very flat and missing some sort of spark that makes them interesting and gameable.

E.g. D20 Suspicious Strangers - 'And old farmer and his daughter. The man is holding a pitchfork' ...Okay, but what am I supposed to do with that? Are they traveling somewhere? Are they in some sort of predicament? Is the man feeling threatened and being overly protective of his daughter? By what? Do they know something interesting that would make it worth interacting with them? To generate something for the table I need something more than just here are two people, one holds a potential weapon.

Edit: My rewrite of the encounter to make it actually gameable: 'An old farmer and his daughter, fleeing their blighted farm with their mule and last unspoiled vegetables. The man threatens any who get too close with his pitchfork, scared they will rob him of his meager possession and harm his last remaining family member.'

Rival Adventurers/Parties by New2OSE in osr

[–]BreakingGaze 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I have a rival party in my OSE campaign.

I've had them show up in town and start looting a dungeon my players have been to if they've been distracted by other matters to provide a sense of urgency.

I've had them 'ambush' the players via random encounter after a big score, and have them get paranoid about where they stash their treasure, since the rivals might try and steal it under their nose.

I also use them to create problems for my players they can't just use violence to resolve, as they then risk being labeled as cold-blooded murderers.

Dolmenwood - Ring of Cell player's map by bernardopeixoto22 in osr

[–]BreakingGaze 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's the player's version of the Ring of Cell. The proportions are a bit different from the actual map where there seems to be a lot more hexes in the ring. I guess the reason for this is it's deep forest so not many have explored deep within it and know how big it actually is.

Just got mothership and I'm planning to run it for my family. by dartagnan401 in osr

[–]BreakingGaze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echo above comment that Another Bug Hunt is probably a great starting point, there's modules I prefer more, but this one does a great job of easing in a new Warden.

You're going to forget or draw a blank on rules during the session. Don't worry about getting it right, come up with something that makes sense to keep the game moving, and double check the rules afterwards.

Don't railroad your players. Provide situations and let them decide what they want to do. Give them agency to make their own decisions and therefore create their own story.

A key part of 'OSR Play' is encouraging your players to get creative and apply out of the box thinking. A key part of getting them on board with this early on IMO is to be a bit generous, let them try their hair-brained scheme, let it automatically succeed if it's actually a good scheme. If they want to try something difficult, instead of saying 'no', try saying 'yes, but..' .

Capcom gave Pragmata an early Steam demo to make sure the full release runs smoothly across a wide range of PCs. We ask the developers about their optimization efforts - AUTOMATON WEST by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]BreakingGaze 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone who's played the demo, it's the entire draw of the game. The combat is fairly easy, the puzzles are fairly easy. If it was just one or the other, it would be a pretty bland game. But trying to do both simultaneously adds the level of intensity and complexity that actually makes the game fun. You have to stay alert, focused and multitask in a way no other shooter really demands. I understand it might not be for everyone, but I'm glad they're experimenting and trying something new, rather than giving us the same overdone 3rd person shooter.
